A happy childhood is not so much the product of material comfort but of a home in which the father shows his wife love and affection and she gives him dutiful obedience and reverence. The boundaries are firm and the discipline rigid but love is also abundant. That suffices for a happy childhood in a suburban house, a rural country home, or even in catacombs as such times do come when the good are forced into such arrangements.

The idea that it is undesirable to bring up children in times like these is wrongheaded. Instead think of your children as soldiers needed to fight against the evil times and the more evil the times, the more children good men and women should have to aid in the conflict.
