Jesus said to his Disciples...

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another"

~ John 13:34-35

In the immediate context...

This kind of love is defined...

Like Jesus...

We are willing to love and serve each other selflessly and practically

Just as he washed their feet and later went to the cross while protecting them

The Lords ministry revealed he would do almost anything to demonstrate his love for his disciples

Whether extravagant, simple, or something in between

Imagine if we all followed the Lord Jesus' example

And proved ourselves his disciples by loving each other in the same way Jesus demonstrated his love to them

And to us !


There always seems to be some confusion over Jesus' reference to this commandment as "new"

Earlier in His ministry...

Jesus made it explicitly clear that love for others was a cornerstone of obedience to God

( ~ Matthew 22:36–40 )

The general instruction to love then...

Is not being stated as if it's the first time it's being mentioned

The "newness" Jesus refers to here is in the sense of something refreshed, re-emphasized, or highlighted

The Greek term Jesus uses here...

kainēn

Leans heavily toward this version of "new"

This re-issued commandment is being given in the context of Jesus' washing of the disciples' feet as stated in

( ~ John 13:2–5 )

Jesus explained that if the Master acts as a humble servant...

So too should those who follow Him

( ~ John 13:12–17 )

Here...

Jesus doubles down on that idea by setting His own love as the standard to which all believers should aspire

In the next verse...

Jesus will further explain the importance of acting in Christian love

In no uncertain terms love...

Especially between fellow believers...

Is meant to be the primary and most powerful sign of one's Christian faith

( ~ John 13:35 ~ 1 John 3:14 )

That love for others is the defining sign of faith for

''ALL PEOPLE''

Marking the life of a true believer

Jesus frames this as a new commandment...

Using His own example as the standard

In giving this charge...

Jesus once again predicts His impending death and departure from earth



PRAYER FOR TODAY...

Lord Jesus,

We thank You for the new commandment to love one another just as You have loved us

Sacrificially, Unconditionally, and Humbly

We confess that our love often falls short of this standard

We ask for Your grace to transform our hearts

That we may move beyond selfishness and judgmental attitudes

Fill us with Your Spirit

That we might love our brothers and sisters in Christ

And our neighbors with the same self-sacrificial and serving love You demonstrated

May our lives and actions be a clear reflection of Your love to the world

So that they may recognize us as Your true disciples

In Your Holy Name

May this verse bring peace, courage, and confidence to every heart that rests in Him

The psalmist thanks God

For rescue from a fatal threat

Near death

Suffering, distressed and anguished

The writer cried out to God and was spared

For this reason...

The psalmist promises to praise God forever

The danger made him question the reasons for his situation

But did not erase his faith

He called out to the Lord

And he answered him

He recognizes that the Lord values all of His people

And vows to publicly honor the One who has saved him

In the world today...

Understanding the Lord's love, presence, and nearness should lead us to serve him

And deepen our relationship with him

While we love God for many reasons...

In a world where important people refuse to spend time with those "beneath" them

We are truly blessed with an incomparable God who listens to our every cry

Recognizes our very own distinct voice

And tunes his ear to hear every one of our whispers

Yes !

I will call on him

Praise him

Thank him

Confess to him

And speak with him as long as I live !

“And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.”

        ~ Luke 12:38

This is part of Jesus' parable about responsible servants

( ~ Luke 12:35–37 )

The servants are awaiting their master's return from a wedding

Jewish weddings could last up to a week, so the servants do not know when the master will arrive

They have kept the lights on, and they are dressed to receive and serve him

When the master returns and sees his servants waiting, he is so overjoyed that he sits them at the table and serves them

If he returns later in the night, and they are still up, he is even more pleased

( ~ Luke 12:35–37 )

The disciples must be confused at this point

Who is the master ?

Why does he arrive home in the middle of the night ?

And why is he feeding his servants ?

That's highly irregular

Like the rest of the section...

Jesus is talking about how His followers should act in their current situations...

Considering the coming fulfillment of the kingdom of God

They should not prioritize their lives, riches, pleasures, family, or honor above the rewards that will come when Jesus is king

( ~ Luke 12:1–34, 41–59 )

If they can focus on Him and hold lightly to the things of the world...

Then Jesus Himself, will bless them

The watches of the night are shifts when guards are on duty

The second watch is from

9 to 12 pm

The third watch is from

12 to 3 am

Some scholars interpret this verse to mean Jesus' return will be delayed

It's certainly true that the first generation of His followers expected to see His return in their lifetime

It's also true that God is gracious and wants to give everyone the chance they need to repent

~ Luke 12:35–40
Explains that those who wish to live in God's kingdom need to be ready for its arrival

Jesus has told His disciples to hold their integrity more tightly than their lives

( ~ Luke 12:1–12 )

He has taught them to not worry about wealth or even the necessities of life

Instead...

They should trust God for their needs while they wait like servants for their master's return

( ~ Luke 12:13–34 )

Each one of these groups of People come up in the BIBLE over and over and they come up with a meaning and a reason each time it's important to know the difference

JESUS SAID THIS

John 8:32 | NKJV Bible:
¹² And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Your explanation is Bible and Bible only including the verses to connect it

Abraham as you know is a Hebrew.

Genesis 14:13 | NKJV Bible:
¹³ Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were allies with Abram.

Abraham ( originallly Abram ) crossed over the Euphrates River to enter the Land of Canaan from idolatry to Worship that true living GOD this earned him the title " Hebrew " or " The one who crossed over . Significance : this marked the beginning of the Covenant with GOD where he promised the land of Canaan for his descendants.

The Northern Kingdom remained Israel and was made up of the 10 tribes of Israel - The southern Kingdom was called Judah and made up primarily of the Tribe of  Benjamin and Judah with many Levites the capital was Jerusalem and still had the Temple - The Northern Kingdom quickly fell into sin and idolatry and never wanted to repent was destroyed by Syria  and never became a nation again and is now known as the 12 lost tribes of Israel - Judah also fell into sin but was saved.

and look at the Jews

The word Jew comes from the word Judah and thus became 'Yehudim' or Jew.

From the beginning Judah was destined for Leadership this is the verse that connects it.

Genesis 49:10 | NKJV Bible:
¹⁰ The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.

Jacob prophesized over his son Judah and this reminds us that the LORD is faithful and true his Living word always comes into time the Prophecies stand and the truth is maintained.

Even when Judah fell into captivity by Babylon they never lost their identity.

From Judah came the Royal line carried into the New Testament the Jews . The beauty of this is that JESUS CHRIST is the LION OF JUDAH.

At the birth of our Messiah HE was named Emmanuel "God with us". This name was brought straight from heaven by the Angel Gabriel.

Matthew 2:2 | NKJV Bible:
² saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

The wise men asked about our LORD this way where is the King of the Jews to be born

Pilate asked (Him) "are You the King of the Jews?"

Paul said "He is a Hebrew of Hebrews"

Romans 11:1-2 | NKJV Bible:
¹ I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
² God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying,

²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

When Jesus was crucified on the cross above his head was a sign here is the King of the Jews. In his death Jesus brought all the covenants together we are all now one in Christ

¹¹ For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
¹² saying: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”

We are now free to call each our brother in Jesus Christ

This verse is one out of a beautiful psalm that is a prayer from beginning to end wherein we can see it is a plea for God's mercy and an acknowledgement that no one is righteous on their own. This verse from the psalm 143 reminds us to seek God in the morning and that we must ask Him to show us the path wherein we should walk and that we must lift our souls to Him while doing so. It is a great psalm to start your day with...

"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend"

       ~ Proverbs 27:17


A common method to sharpen steel or iron...

Is to use a similar piece of metal

When the two scrape against each other...

Both pieces are shaped and rough spots are removed

Similarly...

Two people can interact and help refine each other

Other proverbs note the importance of hearing other people's views

(~ Proverbs 11:14; 18:17; 27:9)

Of particular importance is that this lesson implies a constructive level of conflict...

"Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful"

~ Proverbs 27:6 !!!

Fellow believers who never challenge or question one another are liable to remain dull

Numerous biblical examples show the learning value present in relationships

Jesus may have sent His disciples out two by two because each one would sharpen the other's testimony

Mentoring is also a good example of one Christian improving the spiritual life of the other

The apostle Paul mentored the younger Timothy

Furthermore...

He encouraged Timothy to mentor others

He writes in
~ 2 Timothy 2:2

"What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also"

David and Jonathan are a good example of two men who improved each other's lives

Friendship can help two people enjoy a stronger faith and a buoyant spirit

Friends can...

* Encourage each other
* Laugh together
* Sympathize together
* And Pray together

It is crucially important to carefully choose who we

"BRUSH UP AGAINST"

A Good Friend Can Lead Us to Self-Improvement and Greater godliness

Ungodly People Are Likely to Lead Us Towards Sin and Disaster

My Prayer...



Heavenly Father,

I thank You for the gift of friendship

And the people You have placed in my life

Your Word says that

"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend"

Lord,

I pray that You bring godly, wise, and strengthening people into my life

Who will help sharpen my character, my faith, and my focus

Forgive me for times I have isolated myself

Or overlooked the value of others

Give me the grace to be a good friend

One who encourages, supports, and speaks truth in love to others

Helping them grow

May my words and actions bring out the best in those around me

Acting as iron sharpening iron

Help us to grow stronger, wiser, and more resilient together

That we may bring glory to Your name

And closer to You
