The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Iraq, Ghulam Ishaqzai, confirmed today, Tuesday, that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has made the fight against corruption with economic diversification and service provision.
Ghulam Ishaqzai said, during his speech at the Arab Forum for Promoting Transparency and Good Governance, which was attended by the correspondent of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "This forum represents an important station in Iraq's journey towards stability and sustainable development, and under the leadership of the Prime Minister and his government, Iraq has made the fight against corruption alongside economic diversification and service provision at the forefront of strategic priorities."

He explained that "the theme of the forum this year, which focused on integrity, which is an essential element in a time of complexity and opportunity, comes at the right time," noting that "our region faces unprecedented challenges, as wars, conflicts and violence create a cycle of corruption that is difficult to break." He stated that "the regional analysis of the Corruption Perceptions Index for 2023 issued by Transparency International highlights that corruption remains a major obstacle to achieving a just and prosperous future throughout the Arab region." He continued: "In addition, the UNDP Trends Report for 2023 also highlights that our region's vulnerability to conflicts, disasters and the digital divide exacerbates inequalities and complicates the fight against corruption." He pointed out that "sustainable development cannot be achieved without addressing corruption," adding: "I am proud of the partnership between the United Nations and the Iraqi government in this battle, and through the initiatives of the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, we have achieved significant progress in judicial reforms, anti-money laundering efforts, and empowering civil society and the media to expose corruption."

He noted that "the United Nations Development Program supported the drafting of the Right to Information Law, which was approved by the Council of Ministers, and the draft law is currently being considered in Parliament. When approved, the law will enhance citizens' right to access information, which will enhance public transparency and have an impact on Iraq's global position."
He explained that "this forum is not just a celebration of Iraq's achievements, but also an essential opportunity for regional dialogue, so we must unite to develop innovative solutions that enhance peace, prosperity and democratic gains while improving public services and the ability to adapt to climate change."

The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General stressed: "We need the diverse expertise and views of governments, the private sector, civil society, women's and youth groups, the media and academia to move forward effectively."
“Over the next three days, let us exchange ideas, learn from our successes, and strengthen our commitment to overcoming challenges. Let us return to our communities as ambassadors of change, ready to make a difference,” he concluded.
