The President of India is the constitutional head of the Union and the first citizen of the country (Article 52). He is elected indirectly by an Electoral College consisting of elected members of both Houses of Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies, using proportional representation by single transferable vote (Article 54). The President holds office for five years and is eligible for re-election (Article 56). Executive powers are exercised in the name of the President (Article 74).
