Fact Check: Trump quoted Ilhan Omar tweet saying ‘Israel hypnotized the world’
https://www.reuters.com/resizer/f6c4o5gsZkgBn5D86cBtfjt5Sp8=/706x0/filters:quality(80)/cloudfront-us-east-2.images.arcpublishing.com/reuters/NLQ7MXUABVEYFDRCLBVKAPALSE.jpeg A video of former U.S. President Donald Trump saying “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people” at a 2019 rally has been cut to remove context that he was reading out a social media post by U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar.

Online claims have falsely linked the 2019 video to the October 2023 war between the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel. Trump expressed support for Israel this week.

#Israel has hypnotized the world. May Allah awaken the people and help them to see the evil doings of Israel, Donald Trump #IsraelPalestineWar,” reads a post transcribing the quote on X social media while misleadingly attaching it to Trump. The video was also shared on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.

The video is clipped from a speech Trump gave at a rally in Minneapolis on Oct. 10, 2019. Trump’s full remarks about Omar can be seen starting 1:06:02.

The viral clip cuts out Trump’s words “Omar wrote that,” (1:08:15) before saying “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them to see the evil doings of Israel and the United States.” After a pause, he continues about Omar, “How do you have such a person representing you in Minnesota? I’m very angry at you people right now.”

Trump was referring to a now deleted November 2012 post by Omar on X, called Twitter at the time. Omar has since said her statement unknowingly used an antisemitic trope, saying that was “unfortunate and offensive.”

On Oct. 7, Trump called Hamas’ attack on Israel, “an act of savagery that must and will be crushed.”

VERDICT

False. A video clip of Donald Trump saying “Israel has hypnotized the world” at a 2019 rally, lacks context that he was quoting a social media post by Ilhan Omar.

Fact Check: Video of Las Vegas Sphere displaying Israel’s flag is digitally altered
https://www.reuters.com/resizer/f6c4o5gsZkgBn5D86cBtfjt5Sp8=/706x0/filters:quality(80)/cloudfront-us-east-2.images.arcpublishing.com/reuters/NLQ7MXUABVEYFDRCLBVKAPALSE.jpeg The Sphere entertainment venue in Las Vegas did not display the Israeli flag during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, its parent company said.

The video surfaced online after a surprise attack on Israel by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Oct. 7 triggered one of the deadliest clashes in 75 years of conflict, killing at least 1,200 in Israel and 900 Palestinians.

“The Vegas Sphere showing impressive support for Israel,” read a post sharing the clip on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. A post sharing the clip on Facebook has garnered 351 reactions and been shared 77 times at the time of writing.

The posts show the Sphere, a large spherical event venue, with an Israeli flag on it.

The official account for the Sphere on X replied to iterations of the clip posted on the platform saying: “This image is photoshopped.”

A post on X by a user called “Tallywood” said the video was created using visual effects, sometimes called VFX. The post read: “I posted a VFX video of an Israeli flag on a ball. I was trying to raise awareness of what is goin on in my country.” The user also responded to a post on X sharing the clip saying that it is fake.

The user’s Instagram account features other VFX videos.

They did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Fact Check: Clip shows Arma 3 gameplay, not downed Israeli helicopters
https://www.reuters.com/resizer/f6c4o5gsZkgBn5D86cBtfjt5Sp8=/706x0/filters:quality(80)/cloudfront-us-east-2.images.arcpublishing.com/reuters/NLQ7MXUABVEYFDRCLBVKAPALSE.jpeg A clip of downed helicopters taken from a computer game is circulating with the false claim that it shows authentic footage of Israeli helicopters shot down by Hamas forces.

The clip circulated after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza on Oct 7, with Israel responding with air strikes on the Palestinian enclave.

The video shows two helicopters flying in a countryside location before being hit with missiles and crashing to the ground.

One user shared the clip via X, formerly known as Twitter, with a caption that reads: “Two helicopters of Israel Shot down by Hamas.”

Reuters traced the video to a YouTube account published on Oct. 3, before the surprise attack on Oct. 7, describing the clip as Arma footage. The title of the YouTube video reads: “Two combat helicopters shot down by anti aircraft defense – Arma.” The video’s description also says, in part: “This not representative of reality it is just a simulation.”

A spokesperson for Bohemia Interactive, the developer of the game, also said to Reuters in an email on Oct. 10 that the video shows Arma 3 footage.

Reuters previously addressed clips of Arma 3 gameplays falsely attributed to the war in Ukraine.

Bohemia Interactive published a blog in 2022 on how footage from the game was circulating falsely attributed to the war in Ukraine. The company listed ways to detect gameplay footage, including low-resolution clips and unnatural particle effects, like smoke or dust.
