Log files show the crawl waste you will never see in analytics
Open server logs and sort by user-agent, status code, and request path. For ecommerce sites, the first red flag is usually bots spending most of their time on filter URLs, sort parameters, internal search, and endless pagination. If those URLs create near-duplicate pages, bots can burn crawl budget without helping important category or product pages get discovered.
Look for patterns like:
— the same product-list page with many parameter combinations
— repeated hits on empty filter states
— 404, 301, and 302 chains that keep getting requested
— faceted URLs with no canonical plan
— pages crawled often but never linked from core navigation
The useful part is not volume alone, but waste per template. A page that gets 2,000 hits a month can be fine if it is a key category. The same number on ten thousand filter permutations is a trap. Compare bot hits against indexability: if a URL is crawlable, thin, and unlikely to rank, it should usually be blocked, normalized, or noindexed based on your site setup.
Use logs to confirm whether your fixes work. After pruning parameters, adding canonicals, or tightening internal links, watch for fewer hits on junk URLs and more consistent crawling of money pages. If bots keep returning to dead ends, the problem is usually internal links, not the crawl settings alone.
Start with the top 20 wasteful URL patterns, not the whole site. Clean the biggest leaks first, then check logs again.

An online store cut crawl waste and started winning category rankings
The pattern was classic: thousands of filter URLs, thin parameter pages, and Google spending time on dead ends instead of core categories. The fix was not “block everything.” It was a simple split:
• keep only filters with real search demand or strong merchandising value
• canonicals on near-duplicates
• noindex for low-value sort and parameter combinations
• internal links pointing to clean category URLs
The biggest cleanup came from removing crawl paths that created endless variants: color + size + sort + page. Those pages stayed usable for shoppers, but they stopped competing with the main category. That alone reduced index bloat and made category content easier to understand. 🧹
Next, the team strengthened category pages with plain language copy, better subcategory links, and product blocks that matched intent. They did not stuff keywords. They answered the query better than the filter page could, which is why the main category started to win more often.
If your category pages are weak, crawlers will wander. If your filter handling is messy, rankings get split. Start by protecting the pages you actually want to rank, then let filters support users instead of hijacking crawl budget.

Internal links can make filtered pages rank — if you point them with intent
Treat filtered pages like supporting landing pages, not random crawl leftovers. Link to them only when the filter matches a real search intent: brand + size, color + category, room + material, and similar combinations users actually compare.
Use internal links from strong pages that already have authority: top categories, buying guides, FAQs, and related articles. Add links in plain context, not buried in a giant widget. A sentence like “See all waterproof trail shoes” sends a clearer signal than a generic “View more.”
Keep anchor text consistent with the target page. If the page is about “women’s black ankle boots,” don’t mix in six different labels for the same URL. Variation is fine, but the main phrase should stay stable so search engines can connect the page to one topic. 🔗
Avoid linking to every faceted URL you can generate. Pick a small set of high-value filters, make sure they have indexable content, and support them with repeated links from relevant pages. If a filtered page has no demand, no unique angle, and no business value, it does not deserve internal links.

Data Manager

Out-of-stock pages: noindex, redirect, or keep them? Use the wrong one and you kill SEO.
If a product is temporarily out of stock, keep the URL live if the page has search demand, backlinks, reviews, or a history of traffic. Mark it clearly, offer a restock alert, and suggest close alternatives. That preserves rankings and keeps the page useful instead of turning it into a dead end.
Use
Redirect only when the product is permanently gone and there is a true replacement. Send users to the closest equivalent or the parent category, not a random bestseller. A bad redirect feels like a soft 404 and usually creates worse UX than leaving the page up. For discontinued items with no substitute, keep the page and explain the status.
Rule of thumb: temporary stock issue = keep page; dead product with no value = noindex or 404; permanent replacement = redirect. Pick the option based on intent, links, and whether the URL still helps users.

noindex only when the page has no real SEO value and you do not want it in search at all: thin products, near-duplicates, or items that will never return. Do not noindex every sold-out item by default. If the page is removed from the index, it can lose its signals and become harder to recover later.Redirect only when the product is permanently gone and there is a true replacement.
