Businesses have long understood the power of creative tools, and those at the forefront of the technology wave have already begun to utilize these tools to grow and innovate, giving them an edge in the competitive marketplace. Now, the emergence of creative artificial intelligence for enterprises to bring a new tool, but has not yet been widely recognized. AI has long been viewed as a black box associated with efficiency and insightful analytics, used to extract patterns or regularities from large datasets that are not readily apparent to humans.

However, in the coming years, AI will move from behind the scenes to the front of the stage, becoming more and more widely used in people's daily lives. Rather than replacing human jobs, the emergence of AI will change the way people work to a great extent, especially for industries such as marketing, advertising, arts and communications. If AI is used as a creative partner, it will help people broaden the boundaries of creative expression and make more imagination come true.

Devi Parikh, Director of Research for Facebook's Artificial Intelligence Research Team, said, “Creative expression can't be achieved without creative tools, such as chisels, brushes, and pianos. Similarly, everyone can use these new AI tools to tell their stories in a vivid visual way, visualizing their imaginations, even without an artistic background or relevant training experience.”

According to a McKinsey study, 77 percent of senior leaders surveyed believe that creativity is a key driver of business growth.2 With the help of new AI tools, organizations will be able to meet the need to let their imaginations run wild and explore more possibilities by broadening the boundaries of their thinking, shortening the cycle of developing creative ideas, and articulating their concepts in a more diverse, yet results-oriented, way.

Nowadays, innovative companies are investing in AI products, aiming to lead a new creative revolution. Marketing departments or agencies often combine personal, social and cultural experiences to create many different versions of digital ads, each with slight tweaks to the imagery, copy and call to action. They then run A/B tests to find the version that performs best. However, companies like Pencil, with the help of AI algorithms, can generate dozens of iterative versions of said creative in just a few minutes.

Marketers have begun to see the advantages of using AI tools to collaboratively produce creative. A recent study showed that companies using AI creative tools to create video ads averaged twice the return on ad spend (ROAS) compared to companies that did not use such tools, with some ads in the study reaching up to seven times higher.3 This may be especially appealing to small- and medium-sized businesses, which are typically small and do not have dedicated advertising departments. do not have dedicated advertising departments. The creative boom that artificial intelligence has created and the many benefits it has brought are available to all businesses equally.

Similarly, while synthetic media (content generated or modified by AI) has been used by some with ulterior motives to create deeply fake videos, it is helping to give rise to a whole new way of delivering personalized information. For example, in the same way that green screens revolutionized the art of filmmaking, British startup Synthesia has invented tools that synthesize video clips and broadcast them with avatar stand-ins created by AI software, bringing a whole new way of communicating information to businesses.

The characters in the videos are actually computer-generated and are not attempting to “fake it” and deceive viewers. Synthesia's compositing technology was used to create a promotional video for the recent “End Malaria Worldwide” campaign. In the video, a retired British soccer star became the “voice” of a malaria survivor, introducing malaria prevention and treatment knowledge in nine languages. The video was reportedly viewed more than 700 million times throughout the campaign.

Takeaways
In the EU, we will soon begin training our AI models on the interactions that people have with AI at Meta, as well as public content shared by adults on Meta Products.
This training will better support millions of people and businesses in Europe, by teaching our generative AI models to better understand and reflect their cultures, languages and history.
People based in the EU who use our platforms can choose to object to their public data being used for training purposes.
Today, we’re announcing our plans to train AI at Meta using public content —like public posts and comments— shared by adults on our products in the EU. People’s interactions with Meta AI – like questions and queries – will also be used to train and improve our models. This training, which follows the successful launch of Meta AI in Europe last month, will better support millions of people and businesses in the EU by teaching AI at Meta to better understand and reflect their cultures, languages and history.

What we’re doing and what you’ll see
Beginning this week, people based in the EU who use Meta’s platforms will start receiving notifications—in-app and via email—to explain the kind of data we’re going to start using, how this will improve AI at Meta and the overall user experience. These notifications will also include a link to a form where people can object to their data being used in this way at any time. We have made this objection form easy to find, read, and use, and we’ll honor all objection forms we have already received, as well as newly submitted ones.

As we’ve previously mentioned, we do not use people’s private messages with friends and family to train our generative AI models. Additionally, public data from the accounts of people in the EU under the age of 18 is not being used for training purposes.

Why we’re doing this
Last month, we launched Meta AI in the EU, which was the first step towards making Meta AI’s chat function available for free across Europe within the messaging apps people already know and love – Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.

We believe we have a responsibility to build AI that’s not just available to Europeans, but is actually built for them. That’s why it’s so important for our generative AI models to be trained on a variety of data so they can understand the incredible and diverse nuances and complexities that make up European communities. That means everything from dialects and colloquialisms, to hyper-local knowledge and the distinct ways different countries use humor and sarcasm on our products. This is particularly important as AI models become more advanced with multi-modal functionality, which spans text, voice, video, and imagery.

It’s important to note that the kind of AI training we’re doing is not unique to Meta, nor will it be unique to Europe. This is how we have been training our generative AI models for other regions since launch. We’re following the example set by others including Google and OpenAI, both of which have already used data from European users to train their AI models. We’re proud that our approach is more transparent than many of our industry counterparts.

Our approach complies with European laws and regulations
Last year, we delayed training our large language models using public content while regulators clarified legal requirements. We welcome the opinion provided by the EDPB in December, which affirmed that our original approach met our legal obligations. Since then, we have engaged constructively with the IDPC and look forward to continuing to bring the full benefits of generative AI to people in Europe.

If you’ve been waiting to use Apple's Writing Tools to spruce up your Instagram captions and Threads posts, you’re out of luck. As spotted by Sorcererhat Tech, Meta has blocked Apple Intelligence features on its iOS apps.

Typically, on compatible iPhones and iPads, long-pressing items in a text field should bring up Writing Tools, an Apple Intelligence feature that helps proofread, rewrite, or summarize text. However, screenshots shared by Sorcererhat Tech indicate that Meta isn't currently supporting it.

As 9to5Mac points out, developers can opt out of having Apple Intelligence features appear in their apps. According to a post on Apple’s forum, Writing Tools were available on Meta’s apps when Apple Intelligence first rolled out, but seem to have disappeared with a December update.

In addition to Writing Tools, Meta has also disabled Genmoji and Memoji, Sorcererhat Tech reports. Gemoji allows users to generate a custom emoji using Apple Intelligence. Memoji, on the other hand, is a slightly older feature that allows users to create avatars that look like them.

Meta may have ditched Apple Intelligence to block a competitor's access to its own chatbot. Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Messenger, and WhatsApp already feature the Meta AI chatbot, which can refine text and generate images.
