Scrambled Exif (Remove the metadata from your pictures before sharing them)

Scrambled Exif (pronounced eggsif) helps you remove the metadata in your pictures before you share them.
If you feel like it.
If you don't want the big Internet companies (or whomever) to know where your pictures were taken don't forget to remove the metadata from them before you share them.
To remove the metadata from a picture, simply share it like you'd normally do and choose Scrambled Exif. A moment later, the share 'dialog' will reappear. Now just share with the app you intended to share with in the first place.
Et voilà!

Required Android Permissions:

★ READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE to read the images other apps share with it.

Misc Stuff and Facts

★ Basically, Exif is used by jpeg, which is the format in which your Android camera saves pictures. If you want to know more about Exif, check the Wikipedia.
★ Scrambled Exif also renames the files (this can be disabled).
★ Please don't heavily rely on the data being deleted. Scrambled Exif does its job pretty well, but it could fail. Always double-check before you share.
★ It doesn't really scramble the Exif data, it deletes it. So the name is probably stupid. But I like it. The icon doesn't depict scrambled eggs either. So the icon is probably stupid. But I like it. And I also happen to be a huge fan of eggs. So this app doesn't only have a stupid name and an equally stupid icon, it is also my (non-stupid) tribute to eggs. Especially huevos fritos. Because I love them.

2048

Finally an open source game...

2048 (Android open-source port of the "2048" puzzle game.)

This is the Android port of the 2048 game made by Gabriele Cirulli
It's just a WebView that loads the locally stored HTML files of the original game.
No ads, and no permissions required. Just opens source. :)

I just wanted to make it instantly playable without internet, and with a quick access icon for my smartphone.
It is a bit slower than native code since everything runs in a WebView.

Long touch for 3+ seconds anywhere on the game if you want to toggle the full screen mode.

p!n (Pin notes to the notification area)

A minimalistic note-taking app utilizing your phone's notification area.

*Take notes and save them as notifications
*Edit pinned notices
*Delete pins
*Hide notes for a specific period of time

The app was build with Material Design in mind.
All notes are stored in the app's database and survive reboots.

How to create a new pin

Start the app to create a new pin.

*Enter the text you want to display in the notification.
*There's a number in a semicircle - that's the number of hours:minutes that the pin will wait for if snoozed. Tap it to change the time.
*Click the circular pin button to create your pin.
NB. the small clock icon on the right will create the pin and immediately snooze it.

Pin notifications

When a pin is shown as a notification you can:

*tap Done - this will delete the pin.
*tap Snooze - this will make it go away for the configured time period.
*tap Edit - use this to change the snooze time or title of the pin.

Show all pins

You can cause all pins - including the snoozed ones - to show as notifications by pressing and holding the semicircular snooze time button on the main interface.

Locking pins

Pins are unlocked by default, that means that you can swipe the group notification away which snoozes all pins at once.

This also happens if all notifications are cleared. To prevent this you can lock your pins so that the group notification and the individual notes it contains can't be swiped away.

Troubleshooting

If your pins do not reappear directly after start-up, open the app because on some devices p!n may not be able to start in background. In this case try to enable 'Autostart' or disable some battery optimizations for this application.

A good resource for more information on this topic and solutions for various devices I have found here.

F-Droid (The app store that respects freedom and privacy)

F-Droid is an installable catalogue of libre software
apps for Android. The F-Droid client app makes it
easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device.

It connects to any F-Droid compatible repositories. The default repo is hosted at f-droid.org, which contains only bona fide libre software.

Android itself is open in the sense that you are free to install APKs from anywhere you wish, but there are many good reasons for using F-Droid as your libre software app manager:

* Get notified when updates are available
* Optionally download and install updates automatically
* Keep track of older and beta versions
* Filter out apps incompatible with the device
* Find apps via categories and searchable descriptions
* Access associated URLs for donations, source code etc.
* Stay safe by checking repo index signatures and APK hashes

Terminal Emulator (Access Android's built-in Linux command line shell. Unleash your inner geek!)

This is a new version of the popular "Android Terminal Emulator" application. Same great program, just with a new name.

Top Features

+ Full Linux terminal emulation.
+ Multiple windows.
+ Launcher short cuts.
+ UTF-8 text. (Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Thai, etc.)
+ Completely free. No ads, no in-app-purchases, no nag screens, nothing.

Quick FAQ:

+ If you are having trouble entering text, try installing the free "Hacker's Keyboard IME". (Especially if you have a Samsung or HTC device.)
+ This app isn't a game emulator.
+ This app won't help you root your phone or change your phone's IMEI.
+ You need to know (or be willing to learn) how to use the Linux command line to use this app.
+ You may want to install a set of command line utilities like "Busy Box" or "Debian chroot" in order to add commands beyond the commands that come built into your Android device.
+ If you get a -505 error when trying to install this app under Android 5.0, it means that some other app is using the same permissions. You will have to uninstall the other app in order to install Terminal Emulator for Android. (People tell me that "jrummy's Toolbox Pro" causes this problem.)

Odyssey Music Player (Music player optimized for speed and simplicity? - Indeed.)

The main focus of this project is to create an music player that is optimized for speed (even with large music libraries).

* For support for this application please open an issue at our GitHub repository*

It's main features are a fast music library (artist, album, file browser).

Features:
* Responsive UI
* Album/Artists/Tracks library
* File browser
* Basic playlist management
* Bookmark support
* Home screen widget
* Basic search functionality
* Colorful Material based themes
* Lockscreen control
* Simple Last.fm scrobbler support
* Artwork downloading for artist/album images (Fanart.tv, Last.fm & MusicBrainz)

This music player aims to be very fast and responsive even for large libraries (> 20.000 songs). To accomplish this we try to follow the Material design guidelines as close as possible with multiple colorful themes.

This music player works best with accurately tagged music libraries. We recommend tagging using MusicBrainz Picard.

Things You Need to Know About Open Source

Open Source projects can be a great asset, or they can be a curse – it’s all in how you manage it. To be successful in using open source, there are several things to keep in mind, from licensing to updates. And if you ignore any of them, it can cause problems.

Here are some things to consider.

✳️ What is the license?

There are a range of license options for an open source project, and components can range from free to use everywhere to very restrictive. It is important to have someone who is familiar with license types and who can set some guidelines on what is okay to use and what needs review.

For example, are you okay with publishing changes or new code publicly because you used an open source component? https://opensource.org/licenses is a good resource to review common license types.

✳️ Can’t hackers read the code and find vulnerabilities?

Absolutely, but you can do the same thing. Every Open Source component you decide to integrate into your products should be thoroughly reviewed for any security issues. There are tools that can scan the code, or you can use employee pretesting teams if you do not have the expertise in house.

✳️ Are open source projects secure?

This all depends on the project. The first step I take in this area is to do a web search for any known vulnerabilities for the project. Next, I search the code check-ins and comments for the mention of security, vuln, vulnerability, etc. Even if these come up empty I still have a full audit done on the code for any undocumented issues.

Checking other projects that the developers work on is a good idea, too. If the other code is full is issues, maybe no one has reported issues in this code yet.

✳️ Isn’t open source full of bugs?

Maybe, but aren’t you going to test it? You must treat open source like any other code you integrate, whether it be from your engineers or contractors. Have a test plan in place, validate that the code works as expected and check for error handling. Does the code correctly log everything you would need to troubleshoot it?

✳️ Will the developers provide me with support for the component?

This is a big “well it depends.” Many but not all of the active projects have great forums or chat channels and use GIT to track questions and issues. These can be a great resource for support. There are even some with support packages you can buy to give you quicker response times.

All of this is good, but make sure you have engineers who can read and understand the code. Don’t integrate a PERL component if none of your teams work with PERL on a normal basis.

✳️ Do I need to stay on the latest version of the open source?

No, but you should check a new release for relevant security or defect fixes. It is a good idea to sign up for notifications on code changes and bug reports, too. Knowing that an issue exists even before a fix is available can help you protect your products and customers. Your engineers may even be able to mitigate the issue without the need for the latest version from the open source.

Keep in mind that not all projects update version numbers when changes are made, so keeping track of changes and builds will keep you informed.

✳️ Can I use a project that is abandoned?

Yes, but it could have some risks depending on the function of the code. Some of the abandon projects are not abandoned but have just reached maturity and do not need updates.

For example, code that validates a phone number doesn’t need to evolve until we add new area codes or change the number of digits in the number. If the code needs to evolve and it uses encryption, then it needs to be updated to use the latest secure ciphers, and the insecure ones should be removed.
