Formula Data Analysis
MINISECTOR ANALYSIS: Mercedes does seem to have excellent aerodynamic efficiency, in addition to very high power: PIA (same power unit) had a better exit out of T16, yet RUS easily reached and surpassed his speed, gaining throughout the straight.
BEST SECTORS:
LEC did well by almost matching RUS in sector 1, but his best sector 2 was still 4 tenths away of Russell's.
McL was next quickest in S2, Alpine (Mercedes PU) in S3 (where McL still struggled despite having the same PU).

Here's a question:
Can we still call it "F1" (or even "motorsport") when a ~1000 hp car stays flat-out for 600m and barely gains any speed by the end? π’

π Azerbaijan GP - Race | Pit-corrected Race Pace
(Impacted by traffic β οΈ)
- RUS had the best pace on track, but VER spent the whole race behind PIA and RUS! Mercedes likely had the upper hand, yet RBR performed brilliantly here.
- Ferrari was way back: LEC 0.66 s/lap slower than RUS despite also running in free air for most of the race.
- PIA was only marginally quicker than LEC before the lockup, and struggled afterwards.
- BEA was the best midfielder pace-wise, yet LIN finished in front of both Haas.
- William's pace was terrible: SAI was helped by the SC, then he 'survived' long enough to score points!

π NOTES ON Azerbaijan GP!
- Hard to decide who was Driver of the Day between RUS and VER! Fantastic fight. RBR looked good on the straights.
- Excellent comeback by ANT, who cut his losses.
- 3rd podium for HAD.
- LEC got a decent P4 after a terrible start.
-McL has the same PU as Mercedes, yet on tracks with long straights they perform much worse. I think their gearing is the culprit (the shortest on the grid, by far).
- Excellent result by LIN and Haas
- Won't be a nice afternoon in the Alpine box...

π Azerbaijan GP - Race | Top Speed per Lap
Bearman reached 350 km/h during the Baku GP, the highest of any driver! π
Similar top speed to the one at the start of the ground effect era (351), but far below what BEA himself hit last year (361).
RUS reached 329 with NO OVERTAKE MODE OR SLIPSTREAM!
ANT showed the extent of Mercedes' straight-line performance, hitting the highest average top speed (343) during his comeback.

βοΈ GP2 ENGINE? WORSE
Alonso would happily make the switch, as the Formula 2 cars were WAY FASTER in the speed trap than he was! π€―
In FP1, F2s already hit a 322 km/h MEDIAN top speed, which was higher than the HIGHEST (321) reached by both Astons during the GP (so with slipstreams and overtake mode)!
ALO and then STR retired, but with that straight-line performance, they had no chance from the start!
This is the first time I see something like this happen, which tells a lot about the current ICE's power....
F2 cars run a 3400cc turbocharged V6, producing ~620hp at 8700rpm.
It has therefore way less power than the combined ICE + ERS power of an F1 engine, but it's still more powerful than F1's ICE.
And, once the battery runs dry, F1 cars are left with the ICE only: that's why F2 cars can have comparable top speeds at the end of the straights (where the speed trap is located).
Or higher than that, if we are comparing them to the Aston Martin.

π Bahrain GP - Practice 2 | Top Speed Distribution
My new analysis, 'Top Speed Distribution', revealed something interesting about FP2... π
- BOT, ALB, PER, PIA, GAS, HUL, and STR were playing with deployment: they tested deploying more or less on the main straight, resulting in either highπ or very lowπͺ« top speeds (STR didn't even hit 300 km/h)!
- ANT ran a less powerful mode than RUS for most of the session, but then got full power on a few laps/straights.
- VER (334 km/h) and LEC (330) reached very high top speeds, but just once, and with a slipstream.

Top Teams & Other Teams
ANT was quickest overall, setting excellent lap times on both Mediums and Softs.
LEC was next quickest (on Softs), but both he and HAM suffered from high degradation on that compound.
McLaren was slower than LEC, but managed their tyres far better.
VER's pace on Mediums was excellent despite pretty old tyres. The race outcome could be unpredictable!

π Bahrain GP - Race | Race Pace
(with a revamped look!)
VER won through sheer pace: +0.36s/lap quicker than next-best ANT!
Ferrari had a terrible Sunday start (issues during the formation lap, wrong tyre choice), but LEC and HAM recovered through excellent pace: HAM was just ~0.1s/lap slower than the championship leader!
ALO had the 10th best pace, deserving his points. He also had the lowest top speed of any driver who used overtake mode, making his racecraft even more impressive! π
This "Bahrain" GP was great: for next year, let's make the "Spanish GP" at Spa, please! π€©
