I didn't trust FIA's lack of transparency about ADUO... so we analysed the data from the WHOLE SEASON and wrote a paper detailing the process! π€©

- ADUO upgrades: Ferrari gained 9.6 hp (1/5 of its deficit), Audi 7.6 hp, Honda 11.4 hp;
- Honda lacked over 100 hp at the season start!

Notice that the power figures for all teams are a bit higher than FIA's prediction for 2026.
Anyway, this does not impact the results: what matters is each PU's power difference with respect to the others.

π Ferrari Exhaust Wing Update
Ferrari has radically updated its exhaust wing!
It now covers a much smaller area, both laterally (red arrows) and at the centre (yellow arrow).
The wing generates rear downforce at the cost of more drag and less power.
This new version, being less extreme, should mitigate these characteristics.
Two reasons why it might be introduced at Monza:
1) Track characteristics (drag and power are paramount here).
2) The ADUO 2 engine introduced at this race.
Reason 1 is likely the main driver. If itβs still used at the next race too, that would confirm reason 2 as well!

π Italian GP - Practice 2 | RUS vs LEC Telemetry
Ferrari's new "ADUO 2" engine is powerful, but it still lacks breath compared to the Mercedes PU:
β’ Similar peak power (π’Arrows: similar early-straight acceleration);
β’ Deployment lasts less, resulting in π‘lower mid-straight speed.
Still, a big step forward! Ferrari's deployment strategy seems excellent (LEC's top speed is less variable straight after straight, minimising the parasitic drag force, as noted by @AeroTechVH), but they still need to make more deployment compromises compared to Mercedes.
Let's see in quali with full power!

Considering each team's best FP3 lap, the cars running the updated Ferrari engine (BEA's Haas and HAM's Ferrari) had the highest top speed.
Qualifying will give a clearer picture, but this is the first time this has happened this season!
Despite the updates, expect Aston's PU deficit to still be too large to fight at Monza.

24 km/h between Russell (343 km/h) and Alonso (319 km/h): not reaching 320 km/h AT MONZA, despite active aero, says a lot about Honda's still-lacking power.
Highest top speeds β best performance (GAS, RUS front row).
Ferrari and BEA, with the updated PU, posted strong top speeds in their best laps. No track will be as demanding as Monza.
McLaren favoured lower-speed deployment: PIA P3 despite having the second-lowest top speed!

These rules are a total paradox: for the first time in motorsport history, longer straights can mean lower top speeds β οΈ
Top speed in Monza was "just" 351 km/h, 6 km/h less than at the low-speed Hungaroring!
The longer the straights, the more "diluted" the ERS deployment must be, since a given amount of energy must cover a greater distance. πͺ«
The result? Monza is no longer the temple of speed: Catalunya is, so far! (360 km/h).

Monza Quali really did expose the limitations of the new Power Units β οΈ
The average #F1 team lost ~3s to 2025, and only part of that was due to lesser downforce
Having a powerful PU was critical:
-Alpine switched from Renault to Mercedes, losing less than 1.8s/lap.
-Aston went from Mercedes to Honda, losing more than triple that!
A solid power unit didn't guarantee success, though: Williams still ran a Mercedes PU, and yet lost 3.9s to last year!

Ferrari's ADUO 2 F1 engine upgrade, introduced at Monza, is worth ~15hp based on my calculations! π
βͺοΈ OCO ran the standard engine, π΄ BEA the upgraded one.

Ferrari's ADUO 1 upgrade was worth ~7hp, making this second upgrade TWICE as effective.
That would put them ~20hp behind Mercedes, down from ~45hp at the start of the season!

βοΈ I might have just witnessed the most powerful naturally-aspirated F1 car in existence, and you'll love the story behind it! π₯
Ingo Gerst, owner of the Boss GP Championship, invited me into his box. Among the F1 and F2 cars was a 2006 Toro Rosso.
That year, F1 switched from 3000cc V10s (~950hp) to 2400cc V8s (~750hp).
Toro Rosso received a concession: they could keep using the V10 for one more year, with an intake restriction to cut its power.
Ingo bought the car, removed the restriction to restore its full power, and as the original spare parts ran out, replaced them with newly designed ones, making the car even more powerful (and reliable): it now revs to 20100rpm!

π Ferrari's Aduo 2 Upgrade
So it's confirmed: Ferrari's 'ADUO 2' upgrade (which only HAM had in Madrid) was significant, providing 18hp more in some crucial phases (peak power on corner exit, between 260-310 km/h, in the clipping area) and similar performance elsewhere! π
This debunks a lasting myth: that one F1 manufacturer (RBPT?) can have the best ICE but not the best ERS.
- Ferrari's upgraded ICE made their clipping vastly better, which is exactly what you'd expect, since all energy comes from the ICE anyway!
- Having the best ICE almost guarantees having the best ERS too, and thus the best performance.
