Can you guess the top speed of the upcoming Monza race?
I will check back to tag the winners!
😏

πŸ“Š Useful stats about 2026 cars:

β€’ +6km/h median over 2025.
β€’ Less variable top speed track-to-track (max. ERS power must decrease above 337km/h β†’ 'rubber-band effect'). Excluding Monaco, the lowest top speed was 343km/h (Australia)!
β€’ We already reached 360 km/h in Barcelona

Let's see who'll get this right!

βš™οΈ Power Unit Performance: Power and Drag Decoupling

I didn't trust FIA's lack of transparency about ADUO... so we analysed the data from the WHOLE SEASON and wrote a paper detailing the process! 🀩

This is the most legendary F1 post you'll read this week!

πŸ—’Key points:
- Mercedes: +7.3 hp vs RBPT;
- ADUO upgrades: Ferrari gained 9.6 hp (1/5 of its deficit), Audi 7.6 hp, Honda 11.4 hp;
- Honda lacked over 100 hp at the season start!

Read on for the full article, but only if you're a real data nerd! πŸ‘‡

Notice that the power figures for all teams are a bit higher than FIA's prediction for 2026.

Anyway, this does not impact the results: what matters is each PU's power difference with respect to the others.

πŸ›  Ferrari Exhaust Wing Update

Ferrari has radically updated its exhaust wing!
It now covers a much smaller area, both laterally (red arrows) and at the centre (yellow arrow).

The wing generates rear downforce at the cost of more drag and less power.

This new version, being less extreme, should mitigate these characteristics.

Two reasons why it might be introduced at Monza:
1) Track characteristics (drag and power are paramount here).
2) The ADUO 2 engine introduced at this race.

Reason 1 is likely the main driver. If it’s still used at the next race too, that would confirm reason 2 as well!

πŸ“Š Italian GP - Practice 2 | RUS vs LEC Telemetry

Ferrari's new "ADUO 2" engine is powerful, but it still lacks breath compared to the Mercedes PU:
β€’ Similar peak power (🟒Arrows: similar early-straight acceleration);
β€’ Deployment lasts less, resulting in 🟑lower mid-straight speed.

Still, a big step forward! Ferrari's deployment strategy seems excellent (LEC's top speed is less variable straight after straight, minimising the parasitic drag force, as noted by @AeroTechVH), but they still need to make more deployment compromises compared to Mercedes.

Let's see in quali with full power!

πŸ“Š Italian GP - Practice 3 | Top Speed

Considering each team's best FP3 lap, the cars running the updated Ferrari engine (BEA's Haas and HAM's Ferrari) had the highest top speed.

Qualifying will give a clearer picture, but this is the first time this has happened this season!

Despite the updates, expect Aston's PU deficit to still be too large to fight at Monza.

πŸ“Š Italian GP - Qualifying | Quali Analysis

Aero Performance
24 km/h between Russell (343 km/h) and Alonso (319 km/h): not reaching 320 km/h AT MONZA, despite active aero, says a lot about Honda's still-lacking power.

Highest top speeds β†’ best performance (GAS, RUS front row).

Ferrari and BEA, with the updated PU, posted strong top speeds in their best laps. No track will be as demanding as Monza.

McLaren favoured lower-speed deployment: PIA P3 despite having the second-lowest top speed!

Minisectors: πŸŸͺ GAS vs 🟩 RUS vs 🟧 PIA
RUS was quickest for over half the lap, yet GAS beat him to pole despite only being quickest in T4-5 (Seconda Variante), before T8 (Ascari), and right before T11 (Parabolica).

He was rarely fastest, but never slow: consistency got him on pole!

πŸ“Š Italian GP - Race | Top Speed per Lap

These rules are a total paradox: for the first time in motorsport history, longer straights can mean lower top speeds ⚠️

Top speed in Monza was "just" 351 km/h, 6 km/h less than at the low-speed Hungaroring!

The longer the straights, the more "diluted" the ERS deployment must be, since a given amount of energy must cover a greater distance. πŸͺ«

The result? Monza is no longer the temple of speed: Catalunya is, so far! (360 km/h).

πŸ“Š Italian GP - Race | Race Pace Analysis

Pit-corrected Race Pace:
No car could match Mercedes on pace, even after correcting for Antonelli's extra set of tyres!

- NOR was next fastest, P8 β†’ P4.
- VER and HAM had similar pace; HAM's clash with LEC likely cost him points.
- Alpine best of the rest.
- Cadillac worst by far.

Monza Quali really did expose the limitations of the new Power Units ⚠️

The average #F1 team lost ~3s to 2025, and only part of that was due to lesser downforce

Having a powerful PU was critical:
-Alpine switched from Renault to Mercedes, losing less than 1.8s/lap.
-Aston went from Mercedes to Honda, losing more than triple that!

A solid power unit didn't guarantee success, though: Williams still ran a Mercedes PU, and yet lost 3.9s to last year!

πŸ›  Ferrari's Aduo 2 Power Unit

Ferrari's ADUO 2 F1 engine upgrade, introduced at Monza, is worth ~15hp based on my calculations! πŸ“ˆ

βšͺ️ OCO ran the standard engine, πŸ”΄ BEA the upgraded one.

In quali, BEA accelerated harder at EVERY SPEED: 15.4hp required to explain that gap.

Ferrari's ADUO 1 upgrade was worth ~7hp, making this second upgrade TWICE as effective.

That would put them ~20hp behind Mercedes, down from ~45hp at the start of the season!

πŸ“Š Spanish GP - Race | Race Pace Analysis

🟧 NOR had the best RACE PACE at the Spanish GP (0.24s/lap quicker than 🟩 ANT, 0.41s/lap quicker than 🟦 VER): from a likely win to P3 due to extremely unlucky VSC timing.

πŸŸ₯ LEC's pace was within 0.1s of 🟦 VER's, yet he finished the race 24.8s behind him!

What a pity, replacing Spa with this track... ☹️
❀20πŸ‘2
πŸ“Š Spanish GP - Race | Acceleration Times

PIA and HAM had the best starts, yet their race turned into a nightmare: 2.4s to reach 100 km/h, just 4.5s in total to reach 200 km/h.

PIA was on Hards, making this result even more impressive!

Aston and Audi were the worst cars off the line by far: something to improve on.

βš™οΈ I might have just witnessed the most powerful naturally-aspirated F1 car in existence, and you'll love the story behind it! πŸ”₯

Ingo Gerst, owner of the Boss GP Championship, invited me into his box. Among the F1 and F2 cars was a 2006 Toro Rosso.

That year, F1 switched from 3000cc V10s (~950hp) to 2400cc V8s (~750hp).

Toro Rosso received a concession: they could keep using the V10 for one more year, with an intake restriction to cut its power.

Ingo bought the car, removed the restriction to restore its full power, and as the original spare parts ran out, replaced them with newly designed ones, making the car even more powerful (and reliable): it now revs to 20100rpm!

I mean, look at the size of those radiators…
