πŸ‘€TRACK DOMINANCE - WEEKEND's FASTEST LAPS

The β€˜ideal lap’ (laptime obtained by combining the three purple sectors) was 1:27.075, or 0.166s quicker than Verstappen’s pole!⏱
Still, 0.234s slower than last year's poleπŸ“‰

As in China, Red Bull made the fastest pits! But how much time did the others lose to them each pit?πŸ€”

-RacingBulls was 2nd best; then, Ferrari and MercπŸ‘Œ
-Aston had room for improvement
-Sauber's slow pit stops continue! Imola will bring a new wheel nut designπŸ’‘

πŸ“ˆAlonso gained the most places (6) in Miami GP! Unfortunately, his comeback was worth just 2 points (P9).

Norris: P5➑️P1πŸ†

Good recoveries by:
-TSU (P10➑️P7)
-HAM (P8➑️P6)
-OCO (P13➑️P10)

The Ferrari drivers lost 3 places in total, but still got 25 points.

Norris got P2 in China already, yet the upgrades further improved
@McLarenF1
's performance!πŸ’‘

Top speed, fast/slower corners, and lap time were all closer to the pole sitterπŸ“ˆ

The slow-speed cornering seems to be particularly improved: from a 4km/h gap to a 1km/h edge vs RedBullπŸ‘Œ

How much did the upgrades contributed to that? Imola will tell! πŸ‘€

RedBull might have lost last year's aero efficiency advantage (downforce/drag) ⚠️

Ferrari lacked upgrades, yet it was 6km/h quicker than RedBull in the faster corner, matching their top speed too. Big updates incoming in Imola.πŸ’‘

Little drag (and downforce) for Stroll.

First photos of the 'SF-24 EVO'! πŸ‘€

The most visible change is the revised sidepod inlet: ❌Underbite
⬇️
βœ…Overbite (Like RedBull and McLaren)

Other changes: Floor (largest impact), bodywork, front wing (minor), rear wing, halo winglets.

A very large package indeed!

Ferrari's Imola upgrades must be worth 0.4s/lap to fight RedBull!πŸ’‘

Average Gap in 2024:
0.305s/lap in Quali
0.442s/lap in Race

⚠️ A 0.4s/lap gain would be HUGE, yet RedBull will not be standing still in the meantime...

What's your prediction for the remainder of the season?πŸ€”

Norris was quicker than VER even BEFORE the latter sustained floor damage!πŸ’‘

NOR pushed once in clean air: 0.4s/lap quicker than VE.RπŸš€
He remained quicker even after VER pitted!😳

After the restart (Lap 32) the match was over, but VER had no edge even before the damage.

The factors that made or might have made Verstappen's pace worse:
- Tyre management (first part of the race);
- Floor damage (second part of the race);
- Sub-optimal setup by RedBull.

Norris' pace advantage for several laps, however, suggests that the updated McL was as quick as RBR.

For telemetry nerds like me, even troubleshooting your Diesel Particulate Filter can be fun!😈

Here is the Intake Absolute Pressure: the maximum should be around 255KPa (100 ambient + 155 turbocharging).

And it was! (3 in-gear accelerations shown).
As the problem was solved, the electronics were finally allowing the turbocharger to use the maximum (and correct) turbo pressure.πŸ”₯

In case you wanted to try as well: I used a simple WiFi OBD 2 scanner from Amazon, and the β€˜Car Scanner’ iOS free app.

If you have some telemetry acquisition from your car share them! I'm curious.

Ferrari was confident about their 2022 cooling layout, retaining it for 2023 (with a mid-season change to the rear).

The team changed approach in '24: front overbite and (smaller) cooling louvres moved upwards.

The SF24 EVO 2 changes it again (Overbite + single cooling outlet).

The cannon exit at the end of the engine cover seems to be larger to compensate the reduced louvres area.

Will Ferrari’s in-season updates be successful?πŸ€”

They had fluctuating success recently:
βœ…Big gains:
-2019 (Nosecone cape➑️Less understeer)
-2021 (Improved ERS and efficiency)
-2023 (Improved race pace)

❌Went backwards:
-2018 (Correlation issues)
-2022 (Detuning + TD39)

Ferrari has been using the same rear wing for all the tracks, but the updated SF24 finally introduces a new one!πŸ’‘

Notice the much straighter upper plane 'cut'. Surprisingly, the load level hasn't changed much: the SF24 seems to work well around a specific downforce level.πŸ€”

Red Bull RB20's diffuser can finally be compared to its predecessor's! πŸ‘€

🟣Much less rounded exit; the diffuser itself sports several changes

Upgrades for Imola:
🟑Brake ductsβœ…
Front wingβœ…

RedBull's updates are significant: will they work?πŸ€”

RED BULL VS MCLAREN DIFFUSER

The terminal part of Red Bull's diffuser is more complex: notice the additional 🟑ribs and the πŸ”΄step

McL's diffuser is more minimalistic

A diffuser produces a lot of downforce, and little drag➑️ extracting its potential is crucial for performance!
