Telegram Challenges Australian Safety Rules in Court

Telegram is suing Australia's eSafety Commissioner in Federal Court to fight a A$957,780 (US$622,000) fine from February 2025. The penalty was for delaying a report on handling extremist and child abuse content.

#Telegram claims it's not a "social media service" under the Online Safety Act 2021, so the rules don't apply, and the notice was sent to the wrong address. The company provided the info voluntarily once informed.

The case links to new rules starting December 10, 2025, requiring platforms to block users under 16 or face fines up to A$50 million. Telegram calls it "regulatory overreach" that threatens privacy.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant defends the law: "Platforms must protect kids from online harm—delays weaken our efforts."
