My F1 Visa Experience

So, we were taken in at 12 PM. After that, we gave the biometrics and at that time, only one VO was taking interviews for all the applicants—a curly-haired lady. It went like this:

🔻VO: Good afternoon! So, you’re going to the City University of New York, I see! (excitedly)
🔹Me: Yes, I am going to the City University of New York.
🔻VO: Did you apply to any other universities?
🔹Me: Yes, I have applied to several other universities, such as...

She stopped me there and said, "I see you are going to study Sociology."

🔹Me: Since I come from a third-world country, I’ve seen how issues like child marriage, dowry and the abuse of women occur on a daily basis. I want to be an advocate for women, empower them and fight against gender discrimination.

🔻VO: How are you going to manage your tuition fees and living costs?
🔹Me: My father is going to pay for all four years of my tuition fees and living costs.

🔹Me: He’s an established businessman. He has been consistently importing high-end motorbikes for the past 25 years.
🔻VO: Motorbikes? (excitedly) Do you know how to ride a motorbike?
🔹Me: No, I don’t. (with a soft laugh)
VO: Haha, it’s okay!
🔻VO: What are your plans after completing your degree?
🔹Me: I plan to join a top NGO here in Bangladesh, such as Grameen or BRAC, which have played a significant role in women’s empowerment. I want to contribute to their legacy by advocating for gender equality and working actively to end child marriage.
🔻VO: You have a big dream, girl. I hope you can achieve it.
By that time, I was confident about getting the visa.
🔻VO: Do you have anyone living in the USA?
🔹Me: Yes, I have my aunt from my father’s side.
🔻VO: And where does she live in the USA?
🔹Me: In New York as well.
VO: That’s great!
🔻VO: And you’ve been to the Maldives, I see. How long did you stay there?
This was the trick question and I forgot exactly how long I stayed.

🔻VO: Wish you all the best for your degree and future. I am approving your visa. And don’t forget to have fun there! 😭😂
She gave me that white approval paper first. Then I said, “Won’t I get the blue leaflet?”
🔹VO: Oh, do you want the blue leaflet? Let me see if I have one.
She went inside, searched for one, came back and said, “This was the last one I had,” and gave it to me. I was already in tears.
Key Takeaways:
One thing I noticed was that she wasn’t rejecting anyone for no reason. Either it was because of their DS-160 or their interview performance. If she decided not to give the visa based on the DS-160, she didn’t ask more than one or two questions. You have to be really careful with your DS-160.
I also saw a lot of people whose answers sounded memorized, which could be a reason for rejection.
Lastly, there’s nothing above praying. Tahajjud really works like magic and so do prayers. Keep two nafl fasts with intention—it works. Since I had no other options, I didn’t plan for any other countries. This was everything I thought about.
You have to be really, really confident. I saw people with very good profiles getting rejected just because they were nervous on the interview day. Trust the process and believe in yourself. It will all work out, InshaAllah.
She cut me off many times and didn’t let me complete my answers fully when she got what she needed, so it’s okay to get cut off.

Me : in my daily work I use excel, power query basics of sql apart from that my mentor is also helping me brush up my skills.

Me : mom works as a govt employee and father works for private
VO: what does your father do.
Me: I fumbled a bit as I did not know how to explainit.
VO : he asked again.
Me: I explained and apologised that I couldn’t explain.
VO. Visa is approved. He did not take the finger prints though it was done in the beginning itself.

Me: Yes officer, I’m going to FIT for my masters in Mechanical Engineering.
VO: Are there any specific reasons why you chose this university?
Me: Yes officer, I chose FIT because of its unique location on Florida’s Spacecoast. With proximity to the Kennedy Space centre and other aerospace industries was very appealing to me.
He nodded and said OK and I stopped there.
VO: What was your CGPA?
Me: 6.9 officer
VO: Did you applied to any other universities?
Me: Yes officer, apart from FIT, I’d also applied to University of Alabama at Birmingham and Texas State University. I received offer letter from UAB. Unfortunately TSU didn’t accepted my application.
VO: Hmm, how are you going to fund your education?
Me: Officer, I’m gonna fund my education with my father’s savings of $59k. I’ve also secured an education loan from SBI worth $71.2k.
VO: Hmm OK, I’m going to keep your passport with me. You will get it in a week.
Me: (Was shocked af) Thank you officer. I wish you a very best day officer. I moved away from counter to exit but came back again and said Merry Christmas Officer. He smiled and gave me a thumbs up 👍
My personal experience:
Guys, there were both acceptance and rejection in Delhi today. The VO had rejected 4 people in front of me and honestly I too thought that I was gonna get rejected today. But, put a smile on your face while answering, answer with confidence and look them into eyes. Don’t give generic answers when asked about why you chose this university? Give your real reason why you selected that university and don’t talk about curriculum or faculty or research. Give trivial and real reasons. Don’t let other applicants experiences at the embassy or consulate affect you. Believe in yourself and say this one thing that I’m not gonna come back with my passport from the interview. Make your American dream come true and best of luck y’all. Go and nail your interview!

Today’s Situation in New Delhi Consulate : 90% rejections 10% approvals
30-40 people in the queue before Visa interview, i have seen only one approval for a girl in #counter 13 (did by Old Man) and remaining all people got rejected.

Visa Officer's Appearance: American Lady in mid 30s with a young trainee
The experience:
The Visa Officer at Counter 14 had just came it seems, earlier counter 12 and 13 were rejecting students , if my guess is right 14 is a fresh counter and I was the second one
First one was a couple and they got approved. Then came my turn..
VO: Hii.! Please pass me your passport and i-20
Me: Yeah..!! Hi, Good morning
VO: Just a Smile , So , City University of New York..!? ( looks like she acknowledged it as a good University)
Me: I gave full answer, ans: Yes City University of New York, Staten Island
VO: Which one are you choosing
Me:- I'm going to Pursue my master's in computer science from CUNY.
VO: Great.! What other universities have u applied
Me: I listed out the Universities and told CUNY looked better and apt for me
VO: What did you do after UG.?
Me: Answered accordingly , without any pause or stumble
VO: Why Master's ?
Me: This was the question I fumbled...blabbered something, took pause and answered her on how master's will add value to my profile
Then VO saw me , took a 40 sec break and started typing something in computer and was talking with that trainee
Tbh I got very scared and accepted that I'm gonna get rejected.
Then After break
VO: Tell me abt your masters
Me: i Briefed abt it. , telling abt the credits and research papers
(Next question : didn't expect it, but turned out to be a good question)
VO: what are your plans once you come to India after master's. ? ( Such a great qn)
Me:- I said I'll be joining Zoho , and will try my luck by applying to amazon or Google,
VO : why not your old company.?
Me: No I don't intend to go again, will join Zoho.
VO: how will u fund your expenses.?
Me: MY father is the primary sponsor , working govt job. Our family income iS 17 LpA, i also secured a student .. - Interrupted
VO: yeah I know you have a loan..
Waited for 5 to 15 secs and heard those golden words
VO: " place your left fingers on the scanner, your , Your visa has been approved
