A non-mahram adult man must never be alone with her, and she must be fully veiled in his presence. One of the ways to create a mahram relationship is through breastfeeding: if a woman breastfeeds a male (even as an adult, according to early islamic opinions), he becomes her “milk-son” and thus her mahram.
From any modern, rational, or even basic human-decency perspective, the practice described in these authentic Sunni sources is profoundly perverse and sexually disturbing for the following reasons:

Istibra means: a slave girl is not allowed to have sex for a period of time when she comes to a new owner so that it is clear whose child she will have

The second accusation is explained by the fact that she had not reached puberty and was a virgin anyway, so Istibra was not necessary.
