15th July 2021 Incidence of Ground Upheaval at Kuchpura Village, Karnal District, Haryana.

A submerged paddy field situated at Kuchpura village of Karnal District, Haryana witnessed a spectacular incidence of ground upheaval on 15th July 2021 in a segment that measured approximately 50 m by 10 m. A video made by the local people showed that the landmass started rising abruptly to a maximum height of about 1.5 m within a matter of less than a minute. Since then, the field has regained its original elevation but not without getting scarred and fissured. Prima facie, the phenomenon appears to be a product of ‘flow or static liquefaction’, induced by the interplay of groundwater, soil, rain and pore pressures. It will be proper here to introduce what ‘liquefaction’ means, a term coined by Mogami and Kubo in 1953. It has been used in conjunction with a variety of phenomena involving soil deformation caused by cyclic, monotonic or transient disturbance. When cohesionless soils are saturated, rapid loading can occur under undrained conditions, so the tendency for densification results in excess pore pressures to increase and effective stresses to decrease. Liquefaction has been divided into two main groups of i) Cyclic mobility and ii) Flow liquefaction. The former, which gets initiated by repeated cycles of ground shaking, is commonly seen accompanying large earthquakes in certain types of geotechnical environments. The latter can also get triggered by non-seismic sources of vibrations such as pile driving, train traffic, blasting, flooding, etc. Flow liquefaction failures that are produced under monotonic loading are characterized by their sudden nature, the speed with which they occur and the long distance over which the liquefied materials often move. In the present case, it may be likely that submergence of fields suddenly saturated the substrata consisting of confined sandy layers. This caused increase in pore pressures to the level when the sediments liquefied and the substratum underwent deformation thereby releasing the entrapped fluids, mainly air. In an attempt to escape, the fluids created pressure in the overlying strata, which had turned more impervious because of the spreading of rice-husk ash layers over the field. It could have been a pressure cooker like situation where the anthropogenic act also came into play. It is highly unlikely that the phenomenon had anything to do with neotectonism.
