Court fines BitMEX founders $30 million for AML violations
A New York court has ordered three former masterminds of the BitMEX cryptocurrency exchange to pay a total of $30 million in “civil monetary penalties.”
As reported yesterday, the court received a letter from the legal team of former CEO and co-founder of the platform Arthur Hayes requesting that Hayes be released from jail time. He, co-founder Benjamin Delo and the firm's former CTO Samuel Reid were fined $10 million, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said in a statement.
She stressed the importance of "enforcing individual accountability for registration, market behavior, and anti-money laundering rules," which Pham called "fundamental aspects of the US regulatory framework."
Gretchen Lowe, Acting Director of Enforcement for the CFTC, also stated:
“Persons who control cryptocurrency derivatives trading platforms doing business in the United States must ensure that their platform complies with applicable federal commodity laws, including CFTC registration and regulatory requirements.”
