Il 20 luglio 2001, al culmine del movimento contro la globalizzazione capitalista, centinaia di migliaia di persone si radunarono a Genova, in Italia, per opporsi al vertice degli otto governi più potenti del mondo — il G8. Durante le imponenti manifestazioni che seguirono, un carabiniere, Mario Placanica, sparò e uccise un manifestante di 23 anni, Carlo Giuliani.
