By now, many of you have seen the footage of the monk (or mud wizard) facing off with hapless riot police during the defense of #Lutzerath this past weekend.

In fact, this mysterious figure already appeared in 2018, during the defense of the ZAD (the "Zone to Defend," a longtime squatted area where the residents blocked the construction of an airport) at Notre-Dame-des-Landes.

According to le Monde, the police ambushed the monk among a group of other defenders. The monk threw three buckets of water at the police, proclaiming "I baptize you in the name of the ZAD!" In the ensuing chaos, he made off with one of their batons.

In Atlanta, the police are currently threatening a person occupying the canopy of the Weelaunee Forest, even after police murdered someone earlier today while attempting to evict and destroy the forest.

This photograph shows the forest defender who has been occupying the canopy of the Weelaunee forest since this morning.

Reportedly, in response to police bringing in heavy machinery, the defender has climbed up out of the tree sit that they were occupying.

The occupier is wearing a gas mask because police have been launching tear gas at them.

This takes place in a context in which the police have already shot and killed someone in the forest earlier today.

We are deeply moved by the courage of those who continue to defend the Weelaunee forest in Atlanta, even after police have showed that they are willing—or eager—to commit murder to evict it.

If our species is able to survive the ecological catastrophe that industrial capitalism has brought about, it will chiefly be due to the courage of such brave and selfless individuals.

Over the past week, police have taken brutal steps to suppress ecological movements in Europe and the United States. In Germany, police evicted and destroyed the long-occupied village of #Lutzerath in a massive operation in order to expand an ecologically devastating open pit coal mine. Today, in Atlanta, Georgia, police murdered a person in the course of their efforts to evict and destroy the #Weelaunee Forest.

In this extensive photoessay, a witness of the events in Lützerath documents the clashes that unfolded between police and climate activists.
