January 8, the Brazilian January 6—Tracking the Rise of Fascism from the United States to Brazil

On January 8, 2023, far-right supporters of defeated former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in Brasília, apparently in grotesque imitation of the debacle in which Donald Trump’s supporters did the same thing in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021. In the following report, our comrades in Brazil detail the trajectory leading up to these events and discuss the conundrums that opponents of fascism face in Brazil as a consequence.

"We need to foment popular revolt that includes all the disenfranchised sectors of society, everyone who is targeted by fascists, everyone who suffers under capitalism even when it is managed by a progressive government. We must not delegitimize insurrection when the state apparatus is in the hands of the center-left while the streets are in the hands of fascists and security forces. We must find ways to resist, rejecting the blackmail of those who claim that the most important thing is to maintain order, with their eternal moralism in defense of private property and state power."

On Saturday, January 12, 2002, hundreds of neo-Nazis gathered in York, Pennsylvania in an attempt to promote white supremacy. Anarchists and other opponents of fascism throughout the region mobilized to prevent them from achieving their purpose.

Twenty-one years later, a participant in the battle of York recounts the clashes of that day and reflects on what has changed since then, comparing the events in York with those in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017.

This design dates from a quarter of a century ago. It's the sort of hastily conceived poster that young punks who lived at densely-populated collective houses would compose and print at Kinko's at three in the morning in those days.

Twenty-one years ago today, anarchists from around the Northeast joined forces with local Black and Brown youth to chase hundreds of neo-Nazis out of York, Pennsylvania.

To fight against fascism means confronting by any means necessary those who aim to dominate or exterminate us. It means overcoming all the imposed barriers that divide us, all the partitions based in ethnicity, gender, and legal status. It requires that we propose real solutions to the scarcity and desperation that capitalism creates, to counteract the scapegoating that nationalists and demagogues rely on.
