In response to the destructive December 13 police raid on the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta and the trumped up charges against six young forest defenders, friends of the forest are calling for a National Weekend of Solidarity, January 13-15:

"Host an info night, a protest, a party, a movie screening, or anything else that moves you in your local context."

Two years after Donald Trump's ignominious failure of a coup attempt, we recommend this text about why it was a godsend to the state as a way to change the subject from popular revolt to the preservation of normalcy.

https://crimethinc.com/January6

"Counting on the state to hold the threat of fascism at bay leaves us in an extremely vulnerable position. It’s not unthinkable that at some point, a far-right coup will succeed, at least in some parts of the country, and we—not just anti-fascists, but all people of good conscience—will find that our concerted action is the only thing that stands between us and the establishment of an even more authoritarian society. That is precisely what happened in Spain in 1936."

Today, in grotesque mimicry of Trump's failed coup on January 6, 2021, far-right supporters of previous Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro invaded the National Congress in Brasilia.

Across the world, the far right and fascists are attempting to build the capacity to seize power by force.

Background on the situation in Brazil:

Relying on the state to prevent the far right from coming to power will only strengthen the institutions that they hope to wield against us:

Billionaires and their far-right supporters are attempting to gentrify the concept of revolt itself. We must not let them appropriate or discredit the idea of rebellion:

Footage from the Planalto Palace bears a strong resemblance to the footage of the events of January 6, 2021 in the United States.

Though this will probably not succeed as a coup attempt—Bolsonaro is currently in Florida, far from Brasilia—it will function as a pressure tactic to convey that governance in Brazil will be very difficult without appeasing Bolsonaro's fascist supporters. Even if this effort backfires for them, it will reinforce the idea that the only political options today are to side with the centrists who defend capitalist democracy (Biden, Lula) or to permit fascists (and the oligarchs who lead them) from seizing power.

Both centrist neoliberals and far-right fascists benefit from suppressing the possibility of participatory transformative change.

January 8, the Brazilian January 6—Tracking the Rise of Fascism from the United States to Brazil

https://crimethinc.com/January8Brazil

On January 8, 2023, far-right supporters of defeated former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in Brasília, apparently in grotesque imitation of the debacle in which Donald Trump’s supporters did the same thing in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021. In the following report, our comrades in Brazil detail the trajectory leading up to these events and discuss the conundrums that opponents of fascism face in Brazil as a consequence.

In this footage, anarchists and anti-fascists mobilize in Belo Horizonte, #Brazil today against the threat of #fascism.

It is crucial that we do not rely on the state to protect us from fascism, but organize on a grassroots basis, building strength that cannot be taken from us by an election or coup.

More photographs from demonstrations against fascism today in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, #Brazil.

"We need to foment popular revolt that includes all the disenfranchised sectors of society, everyone who is targeted by fascists, everyone who suffers under capitalism even when it is managed by a progressive government. We must not delegitimize insurrection when the state apparatus is in the hands of the center-left while the streets are in the hands of fascists and security forces. We must find ways to resist, rejecting the blackmail of those who claim that the most important thing is to maintain order, with their eternal moralism in defense of private property and state power."

On Saturday, January 12, 2002, hundreds of neo-Nazis gathered in York, Pennsylvania in an attempt to promote white supremacy. Anarchists and other opponents of fascism throughout the region mobilized to prevent them from achieving their purpose.

Twenty-one years later, a participant in the battle of York recounts the clashes of that day and reflects on what has changed since then, comparing the events in York with those in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017.

With the assistance of the curator of the Labadie collection, the most extensive archive of anarchist material in North America, we were able to track down a copy of this early CrimethInc. poster and add it to our archive.

https://crimethinc.com/posters/the-revolution-will-not-be-on-television-nothing-will-be-on-television

This design dates from a quarter of a century ago. It's the sort of hastily conceived poster that young punks who lived at densely-populated collective houses would compose and print at Kinko's at three in the morning in those days.

A dramatically improved version of the text of the poster later appeared in the inside cover of our book, Expect Resistance:

Twenty-one years ago today, anarchists from around the Northeast joined forces with local Black and Brown youth to chase hundreds of neo-Nazis out of York, Pennsylvania.

To fight against fascism means confronting by any means necessary those who aim to dominate or exterminate us. It means overcoming all the imposed barriers that divide us, all the partitions based in ethnicity, gender, and legal status. It requires that we propose real solutions to the scarcity and desperation that capitalism creates, to counteract the scapegoating that nationalists and demagogues rely on.
