WITH-LOVE-FROM-AMERICA.txt appearing on your Desktop
Hey all,I recently found that a new empty file had appeared on my desktop named WITH-LOVE-FROM-AMERICA.txt.My first thoughts were that I had been hacked, especially with it being an empty file. After some searching, I came across the following repo on Github: https://github.com/RIAEvangelist/peacenotwarThis guy has created an NPM package which creates the file on your desktop, protesting war.The NPM package was then merged into: https://github.com/RIAEvangelist/node-ipcWhich is a widely used packages across many corporations, with the likes of Stripe and Unity. With the way that node modules work, there may be a long dependency chain of NPM packages in your solution. One (or many) of them eventually hitting the node-ipc package.Tweet from the maintainers of node-ipc: https://twitter.com/bantg/status/1504213698658938881I just wanted to let you all know that it's not a virus and you haven't been hacked, it's just someone maliciously adding a new file to your desktop which is supposed to have some content in.You can see here that the whole "adding the text" part of the code failed, resulting in a lot of people having an empty file on their desktop.Just to state the obvious, I have nothing to do with this. I'm just someone who panicked thinking that their computer had been compromised.Hopefully, it also helps you guys out.Update: This has now been marked as a CVEUpdate: There has also been reports of the users desktop being wiped based on geo-location. I don't believe I experienced this myself but it may have happened to other users.https://github.com/RIAEvangelist/node-ipc/issues/233An American NGO lost ~30,000 whistleblower reports, reporting on abuse happening in the current climate.https://github.com/RIAEvangelist/peacenotwar/issues/45
