Most blockchains today rely on replicated execution, where every node re-executes every transaction. This model ensures correctness but becomes a bottleneck for resource-intensive workloads like machine learning inference or on-chain AI.
Symphony, a new consensus protocol developed by Ritual, solves this with a novel approach called Execute Once, Verify Many Times (EOVMT).
🔁 From Replicated Execution to EOVMT
Instead of all validators executing the same compute-heavy operation, Symphony designates a single compute node to handle the workload. This node runs the task off-chain and generates succinct proofs of correct execution.
Then, subsets of validators verify these proofs — not the computation itself — drastically reducing redundant execution while preserving trust.
Execute Once: Only one node processes the heavy computation.
Generate Proofs: That node produces sub-proofs, often partitioned and sharded.
Verify Many Times: Validators are assigned specific shards to verify, distributing load across the network.
Consensus: Once a quorum of validators approve, the network accepts the result.
Symphony eliminates the inefficiencies of traditional consensus by:
Reducing execution overhead
Enabling real on-chain AI/ML inference
Supporting large-scale, heterogeneous workloads
Introducing proof system flexibility (TEEs, ZK, or hybrids)
Inspired by Ethereum 2.0’s incentive model, Symphony maintains liveness through economic incentives and ensures safety via strong probabilistic guarantees assuming ≥2/3 honest stake.
