Italian verbs in the infinitive are divided into three categories:
-ARE
-ERE
-IRE → -ISC
What does that mean?
Almost every Italian verb in the infinitive ends in one of these three endings.
For example:
parlare → to speak
scrivere → to write
partire → to leave
But why do we have -ISC beside -IRE?
Because -IRE verbs have two ways of conjugation.
Some verbs conjugate normally, while with other verbs, we add -isc- in the middle when conjugating them.
Each category has its own conjugation rules.
To make it simple, the first part of the verb is called the stem, and it usually doesn't change. We simply change the ending -are, -ere, or -ire when conjugating.
For example:
parlare → parl (stem) + are
We take the stem and change the ending based on the pronoun.
And we’ll learn how to do that in the next lesson.
