تفاوت بین افعال نشانگر عمل (action) یا حالت (stative)

تمامی افعال در زبان انگلیسی به دو گروه action و stative تقسیم بندی می شوند. افعال action بیانگر عملی هستند که انجام می دهیم یا اتفاقی که واقع می شود. افعال stative به حالت مسائل اشاره دارند یا به ظاهر آنها، بوی آنها و مواردی از این دست. مهمترین تفاوت موجود بین این افعال در این است که افعال action را می توان بصورت استمراری به کار برد ولی افعال stative را نمی توان.

به عنوان مثال

Action افعال

She's studying math with Tom at the moment.و She studies math with Tom every Friday.
They've been working since seven o'clock this morning. و They worked for two hours yesterday afternoon.

Stative افعال

The flowers smell lovely. نه Those flowers are smelling lovely.
She heard him speak in Seattle yesterday afternoon. نه She was hearing him speak in Seattle yesterday afternoon.

برخی از افعال action را می توان در چند معنی بکار برد. به عنوان مثال فعل think هم به معنی بیان عقیده بکار می رودو هم تفکر کردن. در مورد بیان عقیده، این فعل stative است.

I think she should work harder on her math.
She thinks he is a fantastic singer.

چنانچه فعل think به مفهوم تفکر کردن مورد استفاده قرار گیرد، این فعل action محسوب می شود.

They're thinking about buying a new house.
She's thinking of joining a health club.

بطور کلی افعال stative به چهارگروه تقسیم بندی می شوند.
