In fire protection engineering, correct valve selection and placement are not optional details-they are critical to system integrity, operational safety, and long-term compliance. A single misaligned Non-Return Valve (NRV), an inaccessible isolation handle, or a misplaced drain valve can compromise system pressure, hinder maintenance, or lead to catastrophic failure during an emergency

Do you really understand your pump curve?

A pump may be correctly installed and still fail to deliver the expected performance. One important reason could be a mismatch between the pump curve and the system requirements.

Understanding the pump curve is essential for efficient and reliable pump operation.

What is a Pump Curve?

It shows the relationship between the flow rate and the head a pump can deliver at a given speed and impeller diameter.

What should you check?

Pump Curve: Understand how head changes with flow rate.

System Curve: Evaluate the resistance created by piping, valves, and fittings.

Operating Point: The intersection of the pump curve and system curve determines the actual operating condition.

Best Efficiency Point (BEP): Operating near the

BEP generally helps improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary vibration, wear, and energy consumption.

Deluge System vs. Sprinkler System

Understanding the Difference

In fire protection engineering, Deluge and Sprinkler Systems may look similar from the piping side, but their operating philosophy is completely different.

Deluge System

A Deluge System uses open nozzles/sprinklers, with no heat-sensitive element sealing each outlet. The piping network is normally dry until the Deluge Valve is activated by a separate detection/releasing system.
