Here is A Riddle by Jonathan Swift (an Anglo-Irish writer, 1667—1745).
Can you guess what it is about?


From Heaven I fall,
though from earth I begin.
No lady alive
can show such a skin.

I'm bright as an angel,
and light as a feather,
But heavy and dark,
when you squeeze me together.

Though candor and truth
in my aspect I bear,
Yet many poor creatures
I help to insnare.

Though so much of Heaven
appears in my make,
The foulest impressions
I easily take.

My parent and I
produce one another,
The mother the daughter,
the daughter the mother.

The Spirit of January

In the quiet town of Winterbrook, January always arrived like a soft breath over the snow-covered hills. The streets glittered under frost-laden branches, and chimneys puffed out thin streams of smoke into the pale sky.

For the people of Winterbrook, January wasn’t just a month – it was a spirit. Legends passed down for generations whispered that January walked the town at night, weaving fresh beginnings into the hearts of those who listened. Some claimed they’d glimpsed her, a figure wrapped in silver, leaving trails of frost that melted by morning.

Clara, a young girl with a curious heart, believed in the legend more than anyone. Every year, she left a cup of warm tea on her windowsill, hoping to invite January for a quiet chat. “If I could just ask,” Clara would whisper, “what kind of new beginning do I need?”

This year felt different. Snow had fallen heavier than before, and Winterbrook was wrapped in a silence that felt deeper than usual. On New Year’s Eve, as Clara prepared for bed, she heard it – a faint tap on the window...
