Keys to the #listening_quiz about ostriches ⬆

Do ostriches really bury their heads in the sand?

Contrary to the popular myth, ostriches do not bury their head in the sand when scared or frightened. In fact, when an ostrich senses danger and cannot run away, it will flop to the ground and remain still, attempting to blend in with the terrain.

However, from time to time you might find an ostrich looking as if it has its head in the sand, but not because it’s scared.

Ostriches dig shallow holes in the sand to serve as nests for their eggs. The ostrich will use its beak several times a day to turn the eggs in the nest, creating the illusion of burying its head in the sand.

A fine line

A fine line is a very small difference. In this sense, fine means thin. So a fine line is a very thin line, used figuratively to refer to a small difference or distinction between things. You often say this when one thing is acceptable and the other is not:

As a parent, I knew that there was a fine line between panic and caution.

🍿 How do you do? 🍿

The language is changing, and it’s unusual to hear anyone say “How do you do?” these days, but fifty years ago or so it was a formulaic expression used on meeting a person for the first time, and the correct response was not “I’m fine, thanks” or something like that.

The correct response was simply to shake hands and say exactly the same words to the other person: “How do you do?”

This custom was observed in British English. It applied in formal situations where two people were meeting, or being introduced for the first time.

It is scarcely used at all these days.
