I know there are some questions on the quizzes up there, I will plan some posts with explanations.
Let's start with the riddles, there was a question:
(One dozen = 12)
all but 3 = all except for 3
The girl breaks all but 3 eggs = she breaks some eggs, but 3 eggs are safe = 3 eggs are unbroken -> the answer is 3.
❗ Interestingly, 'all but' has 2 meanings:
1⃣ except (кроме):
I wrote down all but the last number - Я записал всё кроме последнего номера
2⃣ nearly, almost (почти):
It's all but impossible - Это почти невозможно
As you can see, these two meanings are quite opposite.
