๐Ÿ”ˆ Telling Time in English ๐Ÿ”ˆ

๐ŸŽง Todayโ€™s conversation is about some of the differences between American and British English usage when it comes to telling time. This conversation also marks the first appearance of my very own mom here on B@E. She give us her perspective on American usage, while my English friend Michael (whom you know from earlier podcasts) returns this episode to cover the British point of view.

โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ”˜ PRONUNCIATION

โ— In two-syllable words, there's a way that makes it easier for you to understand where the stress is on a word.
If the word is a noun or an adjective, the stress is mostly on the first syllable, e.g. people, leisure, water, active, happy, useful etc.. and if the word is a verb, the stress is mostly on the second syllable, e.g. create, prepare, amaze, increase, explain etc.
However, this rule doesn't cover all words there are many exceptions, e.g. hotel, machine, happen, borrow etc.

โ€ข Some words have the same expelling but stressed on the first syllable when they're used as nouns and stressed on the second syllable when they're used as verbs.
We will be working on some of those words today in our class.

๐Ÿ”˜ 2-syllable heteronyms

โ€ขSome words, called heteronyms, have a single spelling, but two different pronunciations. There are a number of 2-syllable words that are stressed on the first syllable when the word is being used as a noun or adjective, and stressed on the the second syllable when it is being used as a verb.

1. SUSpect n. susPECT v.
2. PROject n. proJECT v.
3. PREsent n. preSENT v.
4. REcord n. reCORD v.
5. EXport n. exPORT v.

Examples
1. He suspected the usual suspects.
2. The artist recorded a new record.
3. Can you project when the project will be complete?
4. For my birthday present, my father presented me with a brand new car.
5. The export that's been exported by my friend hasn't been arrived yet.

Today's lesson is how to Pronounce TH!?
There are two dental TH sounds in English, both made by touching the tongue tip behind the top teeth and squeezing the air through. If you only squeeze air, the sound is / ฮธ /, if you also
use the voice, itโ€™s / รฐ/ โ€“ come on then, all together

Throne
Think
Thanks
Thieves
Thought
Author
Authentic
There

โŒBe careful not to make D or T sound, it's/รฐ/
โŒBe careful not to make S sound ,it's/หˆฮธ/

Now Let's read these two examples :

โœด๏ธI thought there are some thieves to pick up the throne
โœด๏ธThanks to the authentic author of these marvelous books
