๐ Study activity - Comprehension ๐
๐ Improve your reading comprehension;
๐ง Remember more details you read in magazines, books, and, journals.
โ๏ธ Your task is to read a short passage and then answer the related questions to each category: Inference, Technique, and Vocab. Afterwards you can send your answers to our groups bot @EngMW_bot, admins will check and correct them if need be.
๐ In this passage, the author discusses the difficulties of learning English:
๐ Learning English posed what felt like an insurmountable(syn: hopeless ) challenge, like climbing an infinitely high mountain. Spelling rules made as much sense as watering grass after a summer monsoon(syn: rainfall ). Silent and differently pronounced letters and arcane grammar rules made me reticent(syn: hesitant ) to utter a single word when I first arrived in London to study. But now, a decade later, homonyms, homophones, and homographs feel like old friends, and I derive such joy teaching my students the intricacies(syn: complexities ) of the language. ๐
๐ Inference
The passage suggests that the author now understands learning English as...
1๏ธโฃ challenging but rewarding;
2๏ธโฃ boring but necessary;
3๏ธโฃ straightforward but engaging;
โ๏ธ Technique
The phrase <...as much sense as watering grass after a summer monsoon > is an example of which literary device?
1๏ธโฃ simile (a figure of speech that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things, e.g.: Our soldiers are as brave as lions);
2๏ธโฃ onomatopoeia (โ is defined as a word which imitates the natural sounds of a thing, e.g.: The buzzing bee flew away);
3๏ธโฃ alliteration (is a stylistic device in which a number of words, having the same first consonant sound, occur close together in a series, e.g.: But a better butter makes a batter better);
๐ Vocab
In context, the word <arcane > most nearly means...
1๏ธโฃ expressive;
2๏ธโฃ absurd;
3๏ธโฃ mysterious;

There's a lesson to be learned in everything you experience.
"On every thorn, delightful wisdom grows. In every rill a sweet instruction flows."
Everything you undergo teaches you a lesson. The question is: Do you have the courage to discover what lesson was taught? Are you brave enough to make use of the wisdom you gained?
Life can be really tough, especially in times of coping with setbacks and failures. But I know from experience: everything that happens teaches a lesson โ whether you like the lesson or not. Often, it took me months to let go of the (ego-based) grief, self-pity, and anger about what had happened. But once that work was done it gave way to a reflective approach to discovering the valuable insights and wisdom that were taught.
Remember that this process takes a lot of time. Wise lessons might not immediately catch your attention, but they will come as very profound realizations once you are ready to comprehend them. With the insight that time provides, you will be able to accept the situation and be courageous enough to let go of anger and bitterness. Only then, with an impartial point of view, profound but wise lessons can be drawn from the things that happened to you, hence increasing your knowledge about the important wisdom about life.
