โœ–๏ธMultiplication Strategies โœ–๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ทDiscover effective ways to mentally solve multiplication problems โœ”๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ทMultiplying complex numbers can seem intimidating ๐Ÿ›‘
But breaking them down into easier parts, you can solve even the most difficult problems โ˜‘๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ถLearn to solve the following problem by breaking it into several parts:

1๏ธโƒฃ Step 1. Break the problem into easier parts:
20 x 6 = ?
20 x 10 = ?
4 x 10 = ?
4 x 6 = ?

2๏ธโƒฃ Step 2. Solve each part:
20 x 10 = 200
20 x 6 = 120
4 x 10 = 40
4 x 6 = 24

3๏ธโƒฃ Step 3. Add each product to get the answer:
200 + 120 + 40 + 24 = 384 is the answer.

โœ…Tips๐Ÿ“:

๐Ÿ”†To break harder multiplication problems into easier ones, look for ways to multiply by numbers with a 0 at the end or by reducing other numbers to easier multiples.

๐Ÿ”…For example, to calculate 35 x 8, you can break it into any of the following:

๐Ÿ”น 30 x 8 + 5 x 8 = 240 + 40 = 280

๐Ÿ”น 35 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 70 x 2 x 2 = 140 x 2 = 280

๐Ÿ”น 20 x 8 + 10 x 8 + 5 x 8 = 160 + 80 + 40 = 280

๐Ÿ”น 10 x 8 + 10 x 8 + 10 x 8 + 5 x 8 = 80 + 80 + 80 + 40 = 280

โ™ป๏ธWe will return to this exercise to work through other multiplication problems, these practices are referred not only to teach maths, but so "math" vocabulary for English learners ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ”˜ GRAMMAR CLASS

๐Ÿ›‘ AUXILIARY VERBS

๐Ÿ“ Auxiliary verbs are used together with a main verb to show the verbโ€™s tense or to form a negative or question. The most common auxiliary verbs are have, do and can.

๐Ÿ“ Auxiliary verbs are useful in giving short answers to questions. Basically, your answer can end with an auxiliary verb.

๐Ÿ“ Auxiliary verbs are also known as helping verbs.

๐Ÿ”… In each of these sentences there is an auxiliary verb and a main verb:

โœ… I have lost my keys.
โœ… She can't come to the party.
โœ…The hotel was built ten years ago.
โœ… Where do you live?

๐Ÿ”… In the above examples have/can't/was/do are auxiliary verbs.

๐Ÿ“ We can use an auxiliary verb when we don't want to repeat something.

โœ… Have you locked the door? Yes, I have. (= I have locked the door)
โœ… Gary wasn't working, but Laura was. (=Laura was working )
โœ… Jessica could lend me the money, but she won't. (= she won't lend me the money )

๐Ÿ“ We use do/does/did for the present and past simple.

โœ… Do you like onions? Yes, I do. (= I like onions )
โœ… Does Simon live in London? He did, but he doesn't anymore.

๐Ÿ“ We can use auxiliary verbs to deny what somebody says (= say it is not true)

โœ… You're sitting in my place. No, I am not. (= I'm not sitting in your place )
โœ… You didn't lock the door before you left. Yes, I did. (= I locked the door )

๐Ÿ“ We use have you? / isn't she? / do they? etc. to show interest in what somebody has said, or to show surprise.

โœ… I've just seen Stephen. Oh, have you? How is he?
โœ… Lisa isn't very well today. Oh, isn't she? What's wrong with her?
โœ… It rained everyday during our holiday. Did it? What a shame!
โœ… James and Tanya are getting married. Are they? Really?

๐Ÿ“ We use auxiliary verbs with so and neither.

โœ… I'm tired. So am I. (= I'm tired too)
โœ… I never read newspapers. Neither do I. (= I never read newspapers either)
โœ… Sarah hasn't got a car and neither has Mark.

๐Ÿ“ Note the word order after so and neither (verb before subject)

โœ… I passed the exam and so did Paul. ( not so Paul did)

๐Ÿ“ Instead of neither, we can use nor. We can also use not ... either.

โœ… I don't know. Neither do I. or Nor do I. or I don't either.

๐Ÿ”… I think so / I hope so etc.
๐Ÿ“ After some verbs we use so when we don't want to repeat something.

โœ… Are those people Korean? I think so. (= I think they are Korean )
โœ… Will you be at home this evening? I expect so. (= I expect I'll be at home this evening )
โœ… Do you think Kate has been invited to the party? I suppose so.

๐Ÿ“ In the same way we say:
๐Ÿ”…I hope so, I guess so and I'm afraid so.

The usual negative forms are:
๐Ÿ”นI think so / I expect so โžก๏ธ I don't think so / I don't expect so
๐Ÿ”นI hope so / I'm afraid so / I guess so โžก๏ธ I hope not / I 'm afraid not / I guess not
๐Ÿ”นI suppose so โžก๏ธ I don't suppose so or I suppose not

โœ… Is that woman American? I think so. / I don't think so.
โœ… Do you think it will rain? I hope so. / I hope not. (not I don't hope so)

โ€ ๐ŸŽต๐Ÿ”ด โšœPRONUNCIATION โšœ๐Ÿ”ด๐ŸŽต

โญ•๏ธToday on English with Masters we proposed this motivational text for the pronunciation classโญ•๏ธ

โ™ฆ๏ธ No positive change can occur in your life as long as you cling to the thought that the reason for your not living well lies outside yourself. As long as you place responsibility entirely on others who treat you unfairly__ a loutish husband, a demanding and unsupportive boss, bad genes, irresistible compulsions__ then your situation will remain at an impasse. You and only you alone are responsible for the crucial aspects of your life situation, and only you have the power to change it. And even if you face overwhelming external restraints, you still have the freedom and choice of adopting various attitudes towards those restraints.
