๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ“š The Woodcutter๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“–

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant, and he got it. His salary was really good and so were the working conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an Axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to fell the trees.

The first day, the woodcutter brought fifteen trees. โ€œCongratulations,โ€ the boss said, โ€œ Carry on with your work!โ€. Highly motivated by the words of his boss, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring ten trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he was only able to bring seven trees.

Day after day he was bringing less and less trees โ€œI must be losing my strength.โ€ The woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on โ€œWhen was the last time you sharpened your axe?โ€ The boss asked โ€œSharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe, I have been very busy trying to cut treesโ€ The woodcutter replied.

Moral: Most of us never update our skills. We think that whatever we have learned is very much enough. But well, is not good when better is expected. Sharpening our skills from time to time is the key to success

Linking words and phrases

session #n6
Linking words/phrases make your writing more interesting to the reader and easier to understand. Some linking words (e.g. and, because, but, so, since, etc.) can join two short sentences into one longer sentence. e.g.

He is clever. He is hard-working. โžก๏ธ He's clever and hard-working.
Ann is happy. She passed her exams. โžก๏ธ Ann is happy because she passed her exams.

Some linking words/phrases (e.g. In addition, what is more, However, On the other hand, etc.) show how ideas are related either between two sentences or two paragraphs. e.g.

I have written to you three times already. I still have not received a reply from you. โžก๏ธ
I have written to you three times already. However, I still have not received a reply from you.

See how two paragraphs are connected using linking words

First complaint:
Firstly the employees who delivered the cooker were extremely rude and careless. While installing the appliance they made a considerable mess, then they left without tidying the kitchen up.

Adding more points:
second complaint: Furthermore, after they had gone, I noticed that the cooker was badly scratched and the operating instructions were missing....

Let's get to know some linking words:

Linking words/phrases can be used to:
๐Ÿ”ธ show time: when, whenever, before. while, as soon as, etc.
๐Ÿ”บ list points or show sequence: first (ly), to start with, next, finally, etc.
๐Ÿ”น add more points: furthermore, moreover, in addition, and, also, what is more, etc.
๐Ÿ”ธ show cause or effect: because, since, as a result, so, consequently, etc.
๐Ÿ”บ give examples: for instance, for example, such as, especially, etc.
๐Ÿ”น show contrast: however, on the other hand, despite, though, etc.
๐Ÿ”ธ introduce a conclusion: all in all, to conclude, to sum up, finally, etc.

Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.
Good morning.
Have a GREAT day.

๐Ÿ”ˆ Perfectionism and Procrastination 2&3 ๐Ÿ”ˆ

๐ŸŽง In todayโ€™s conversation, my friend Yvette and I continue our discussion about perfectionism. The main focus of this part of the conversation is how perfectionist tendencies can cause problems in foreign language learning, particularly for adult learners. Another thing that comes up is a couple of usage differences between British and American English. So without further ado, here is the conversation:

Writing Techniques
There are a variety of writing techniques you can use to make your composition more interesting to the reader. To begin or end your essay you can:

๐Ÿ”… - address the reader directly i.e. write as if you were speaking to him/her. (not recommended in formal writing)
e.g. You can imagine what life would be like without water,

๐Ÿ”… - use direct speech to give somebody's exact words, a quotation from a famous person or someone who has influenced your life, a proverb or a saying (i.e. a well-known phrase). In all cases it is necessary to use quotation marks.
e.g. After all, "An apple a day keeps the doctor awayโ€

๐Ÿ”… - use a rhetorical question i.e. a question that does not expect a reply.
e.g. What would modem society be like without computers?

๐ŸŒ€ You can start a narrative by setting the scene i.e. by using the senses to describe the weather, atmosphere, surroundings and also to create mystery and suspense.
e.g. It was a cold winter's night. The wind was blowing hard as Jack was walking down the dark empty street.

๐ŸŒ€ You can also use a variety of adjectives, adverbs and verbs to make your composition more attractive to the reader.
e. g. -Hold on!- Rose screamed to Jack as she desperately tried to help him get out of the freezing water.
