๐Ÿ”ต INTRODUCTION

Identifying or defining relative clauses
__________________
๐Ÿ”น A clause is a group of words containing a verb.
We use relative clauses to describe or give extra information about a person, thing, place, event etc. we have already mentioned.
We often use them to avoid repeating information.
โŒ I saw the woman the woman you told me about
โœ”I saw the woman that you told me about

We often use relative pronouns (e.g. who, whom, where, that, which, whose, when and why) to introduce relative clauses.

๐Ÿ”ต INTRODUCTION

๐Ÿ”นWe use non-defining relative clauses to give extra information about the person or thing. It is not necessary information. We donโ€™t need it to understand who or what is being referred to.

โ–ช๏ธ We always use commas to separate a non-defining relative clause to the main clause and the rest of the sentence (if there is).

โ–ช๏ธ My mother, who is very kind to me, wants to see me next month.

NOTE
We do not use (that) to introduce a non-defining relative clause:
โŒ My mother, that is very kind to me, wants to see me next month.
