The L sound can be difficult to learn for some English language learners. That's because there are
actually two L sounds in English: the light L sound and the velar (or dark) L sound . In this lesson, you will learn how to make both L sounds and practice pronunciation with exercises.
The light L sound is usually found at the beginning of a word.
Let's practice:
โญ•๏ธlike
โญ•๏ธlip
โญ•๏ธlaugh
โญ•๏ธlong
โญ•๏ธless
โญ•๏ธlarge

The dark L sound is really two sounds: a vowel sound + the L sound. After making the vowel sound, the tip of your tongue will rise up and press against the back of your top teeth in the same way as the light L sound. The dark L sound is a voiced sound, so your vocal cords will make the sound.
The dark L sound is often found in the middle or at the end of a word.
Let's practice:
๐Ÿ”ดmilk
๐Ÿ”ดhelp
๐Ÿ”ดwhole
๐Ÿ”ดtall
๐Ÿ”ดtall
๐Ÿ”ดgirl
๐Ÿ”ดcall
๐Ÿ”ดpuddle
๐Ÿ”ดreal
๐Ÿ”ดe-mail

Now say these sentences out loud:

1) I like to learn languages.
2) Lisa loves Larry a lot.
3) That is a long blog about learning.
4) It is a really good deal .
5) The small ball fell in the cool pool .
6) Call the tall girl .
7) Please leave the who le glass of milk on the table.
8) Look at the really l ittle flag.
9) I will list all of the final detai ls in my letter.
10) Please send the last e-mai l to my family

FOOD FOR THOUGHTโ€‹

In an ancient Temple, a number of pigeons lived happily on the roof top.

When renovation of the Temple began for the annual feast, the Temple pigeons relocated to a Church nearby.

The resident pigeons in the Church accommodated the new comers very well.

When Christmas was approaching and the Church was being given a facelift, all the pigeons had to move out to look for another place.

They were fortunate to find a place in a Mosque nearby, where they were happily welcomed by the pigeons resident in the Mosque.

When it was Ramadan time and the Mosque was being repainted, all the pigeons returned to the ancient Temple.

One day, the pigeons witnessed communal clashes in the market square below.

A baby pigeon asked its mother pigeon: "Who are those fighting below?"

The mother replied: "They are 'human beings'."

The baby pigeon then asked,
"But why are they fighting each other?"

The mother said:
"The human beings who go to the Temple are called 'Hindus', the ones who go to Church are called 'Christians', while the ones who go to the Mosque are called 'Muslims'."

The baby pigeon asked,
"Why is it so? When we were in the Temple, we were called Pigeons; when we were in the Church, we were called Pigeons; and when we were in the Mosque, we were called Pigeons. So shouldn't they similarly just be called 'human beings' wherever they go?"

The mother pigeon replied:
"You, me and our Pigeon friends have experienced God and that's why we are living here in this highly elevated place peacefully.

These people are yet to experience God.

Hence they are fighting and killing each other when they are all human beings created by the same God whom they all claim to serve. Perhaps there will be peace if they refer to themselves simply as human beings instead of seeing themselves as Hindus, Christians or Muslims."

โœ”๏ธStay In Your Lane

Stick to what you're good at

๐Ÿ“šMeaning- Stay in your lane is a phrase similar to "mind your own business" (MYOB) that is used to tell a person to only talk about or do what he is good at. The phrase comes from lanes on a road that guide traffic and keep drivers from going where they shouldn't.

The phrase is often used by someone who is annoyed by the actions of another person. The phrase became a trending topic on social media when LaVar Ball told reporter Kristine Leahy to "stay in yo lane" on The Herd Live when she criticized Ball's clothing brand.

Why is break not rhymed with freak?
Will you tell me why it's true
We say sew but likewise few?
And the maker of the verse,
Cannot rhyme his horse with worse?
Beard is not the same as heard
Cord is different from word.
Cow is cow but low is low
Shoe is never rhymed with foe.
Think of hose, dose,and lose
And think of goose and yet with choose
Think of comb, tomb and bomb,
Doll and roll or home and some.
Since pay is rhymed with say
Why not paid with said I pray?
Think of blood, food and good.
Mould is not pronounced like could.
Wherefore done, but gone and lone
Is there any reason known?
To sum up all, it seems to me
Sound and letters don't agree

๐Ÿ—ฃEmphasis training ๐Ÿ—ฃ

๐Ÿ’ขEmphasize words to change the meaning of sentences.

๐Ÿ’ขEmphasizing different words can dramatically change the meaning of a sentence.

๐Ÿ”† Read the following sentences out loud and emphasize the highlighted word to see how the meaning can shift:

1๏ธโƒฃ <I> didn't say your speech was boring. (It definitely wasn't me)

2๏ธโƒฃ I <DIDN'T> say your speech was boring. (Emphatically, I did not)

3๏ธโƒฃ I didn't <SAY> your speech was boring.
(I never uttered this out loud)

4๏ธโƒฃ I didn't say <YOUR> speech was boring.
(If I said a speech was boring, it wasn't yours)

5๏ธโƒฃI didn't say your speech was <BORING>.
(My critique of your speech did not include that it was boring)
โž–โž–โž–โž–โž–โž–โž–โž–โž–โž–
๐Ÿ”ฐPractice changing where your emphasis falls in a sentence to shape meaning in dramatic or subtle ways.

๐Ÿ”ต For notes ๐Ÿ“:

๐Ÿ”ธAs you draft a speech or presentation, consider the meaning you would like the audience to understand from each sentence. Think about which words to emphasize to achieve that meaning.

๐Ÿ”ธVary you volume, pitch, and rhythm. This is not only helps you shape emphasis and meaning, it also keeps the listeners more engaged by making sure your speech doesn't feel monotonous.

๐Ÿ”ธAs you practice your speech, make sure you aren't emphasizing too many words. Doing so will distract the audience and keep you from achieving your desired effect.
