Session #n72: Opinion Essays

Opinion essays are discursive essays in which you present your personal opinion on a particular topic. Your opinion must be stated clearly and supported by justifications. You should also present the opposing viewpoint(s) in a separate paragraph.

An opinion essay should consist of:
a) an introduction, in which you introduce the subject and state your opinion clearly;
b) a main body, consisting of two or more paragraphs (each presenting a separate viewpoint supported by reasons/ examples), including a paragraph giving the opposing viewpoint supported by reasons examples; and
c) a conclusion, in which you restate your opinion using different words.

โš ๏ธ You normally use present tenses in thist ype of Writing, and phrases such as I believe, In my opinion , I think, It seems to me that, I strongly disagree with, etc to express your opinion. You should list your viewpoints with Firstly, Furthermore, Moreover, Also, etc, and introduce the opposing viewpoint using However, On the other hand, etc.

โš ๏ธ Opinion essays are normally written in a formal style, therefore you should avoid using colloquial expressions, short forms or personal examples. You can find this type of writing in the form of an article in newspapers, magazines, etc.

โš ๏ธ Each main body paragraph should start with a topic sentence which clearly states the main idea of the paragraph. This should be followed by appropriate supporting sentences which justify the main idea and/ or give examples.

๐Ÿถ Pet Day
๐Ÿฑ

Pet Day is a chance for those of us who own pets to show them how much we love them. Now, we all can think of the traditional things: a new toy, some tasty treats, or a long walk in the park, maybe a game of fetch, assuming you have a dog! But, think outside the box and come up with some ideas to celebrate your relationship with your pet. Once you have indulged your own animals with their favourite treats, why not consider donating to a shelter or or other animal welfare organization?

There are so many neglected and unwanted animals waiting for some love and attention. You can donate your time, or you can donate food or other supplies. Every little bit helps. If you donโ€™t already own a pet, what better time to adopt one? A good phrase to keep in mind is โ€œadopt, donโ€™t shop.โ€

โ€‹โ€‹โ€ โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ Describing Peopleโ€™s Moods๐Ÿ˜

Brett: Do you know what kind of mood Mom is in?

Molly: Not really. Why?

Brett: I really need a raise in my allowance and Iโ€™m waiting for the right time to ask. Sheโ€™ll be more likely to say โ€œyesโ€ if sheโ€™s not feeling too grouchy.

Molly: I wouldnโ€™t count on this being a good time. She looked a little upset after getting off the phone with Aunt Teri.

๐Ÿ“ Lyrics

Treating you well, but I'm caught in the middle
I caught the edge of the knife and it hurts just a little
Yeah, and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know that I can't be your friend
It's my head or my heart and I'm caught in the middle
My hands are tied but not tight enough
You're the high that I can't give up
Oh Lord, here we go
I might hate myself tomorrow but Iโ€™m on my way tonight
At the bottom of the bottle, you're the poison in the wine
And I know I canโ€™t change you and I, I wonโ€™t change
I might hate myself tomorrow but Iโ€™m on my way tonight
Letโ€™s be lonely together
A little less lonely together
Eyes wide shut and it feels like the first time (oh)
Before the rush to my blood hurts too much and we flatline (oh)
Yeah and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know just how this ends
I'm all messed up and it feels like the first time (oh)
I might free myself tomorrow, but Iโ€™m on my way tonight
At the bottom of the bottle, you're the poison in the wine
And I know I canโ€™t change you and I, I wonโ€™t change
I might hate myself tomorrow, but Iโ€™m on my way tonight
Letโ€™s be lonely together
A little less lonely together
Letโ€™s be lonely together (yeah)
A little less lonely together (yeah)
My hands are tied but not tight enough
You're the high that I can't give up
Oh Lord, here we go
I might hate myself tomorrow but Iโ€™m on my way tonight
At the bottom of the bottle, you're the poison in the wine

One of the many compensating charms of the often infuriating English language is the ease with which speakers and writers may exercise creativity and inventiveness. One of its most inventive components is the portmanteau word โ€” one formed by combining two words into a single (and often deprecating and/or ironically humorous) term that denotes a new concept.

โœ”๏ธBRUNCH

๐Ÿ“šMeaning- a meal that is eaten after breakfast but before lunch. Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch eaten usually during the late morning to early afternoon, generally served from 11am up to 3pm, and regularly has some form of alcoholic drink (most usually champagne or a cocktail) served with it. The word is a portmanteau of breakfast and lunch.

ใ€ฐ๐Ÿฆ‹ใ€ฐ

ใ€ฐ๐ŸŒธ โ€˜My final meal in Melbourne was a lovely brunch at the Comfortable Chair on Lygon Street.'

ใ€ฐ๐ŸŒธโ€™We send them candy and flowers and take them out for brunch, lunch or dinner.โ€™
