Session #n46: Describing Places/ Buildings

๐Ÿ”˜ A descriptive composition about a place or building should consist of:
โœ”๏ธ a) an introduction in which you give the name and location of the place or building and/or the reason for choosing it;
โœ”๏ธ b) a main body in which you describe the main aspects of the place or building in detail - for example, when you describe a place you should describe what you can see and do there; when you describe a building you should describe its exterior and interior, as well as give historical facts about it;
โœ”๏ธ c) a conclusion which includes your comments/feelings and/or a recommendation.

โ—๏ธ Descriptions of places or buildings can be found in tourist magazines, travel brochures, stories, letters. etc. The style you use depends on the situation and the intended reader. For example, in an article for a magazine you should use semi-formal style and a polite, respectful tone. You normally use present tenses to describe a place/ building. ๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽถโšœIntonation & Stressโšœ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽต

Intonation is a difficult skill to control consciously, we rarely think about it as we speak. It is very
common for students to import the stress and intonation patterns from their first language, which
can create difficulty for the listener.
The most effective way to master intonation is through working on the three areas separately.
The English are famous for saying one thing and meaning another โ€“ using intonation to show
meaning. These subtleties can be lost on a learner of English. English uses a wide pitch range and
four patterns โ€“ fallโ†˜, fall-rise โ†˜โ†—, riseโ†— and rise-fallโ†˜.
If a learner of English is misunderstood, it is more often due to misplaced stress than incorrect
pronunciation โ€“ for this reason, stress is perhaps the most important aspect of clear speech.
The high-fallโ†˜
A very British melody, this is where the speaker begins high and drops low.
What a lovely surโ†˜prise!
How was your weeโ†˜kend?
Iโ€™d โ†˜like to watch a film.

fall-rise โ†˜โ†—
The English are (perhaps unfairly) famous for a reserved delivery, subtlety, possibly sarcasm.
Heโ€™s a good โ†˜โ†—dancer.
The โ†˜โ†—main course was goodโ€ฆ.
Thereโ€™s always a main stress in any English sentence
I donโ€™t beโ†—lieve it.
Could I โ†—ask you something?
Whatโ€™s the point of making this sentence so โ†—long?

rise-fallโ†˜
There is probably nothing more British than a statement tag, โ†˜is there?
Thatโ€™s a wall, โ†˜isnโ€™t it?
Mariaโ€™s gone home, โ†˜hasnโ€™t she?
There is a lot of work to do, โ†˜isn't there?

rise โ†—
Itโ€™s warm in August, โ†—generally speaking.
Iโ€™ve had enough, โ†—basically.
But, there's Good News
Although English is undeniably a very confusing and perhaps complicated language to pronounce
well, there is some good news โ€“ it can be learnt. Pronunciation is like any other skill โ€“ it involves
learning new movements and rules and practising them until they become second nature.

Thanks for listening guys and I hope it can help you.
