I've watched my oldest son change so much in the last two years. He went from this sweet little boy who looked to me for all his answers... And then suddenly his brain flipped a switch. He wasn't oscillating in Theta anymore, he was clearly in Alpha. He started looking to his friends and teachers for answers. He's still a sweet.....young man? I mean, he's turning 9 next month so he's obviously still a boy, but the way he carries himself now has.... Shifted.
He's not a little boy anymore. Now there's a world of responsibility building behind those eyes of his.
He needs to have input.
He needs to feel safe.
But he also needs to feel challenged.
He needs independence and (safe) autonomy.
He needs me to take a few steps back so he can take a few steps forward.
He needs to lead but he also needs guidance.
He needs responsibility but he also needs to have the freedom to be a kid.
It's a delicate balance. Emotions are changing. And so are his responses. Ambition is growing. And so are his skills.
It makes it that much more special when he comes to me now. Because now he knows I'm not his only resource in this world for context, examples and information. It's now a choice. He can keep his questions inside, or direct them to his friends, his teachers. So when he says "mom can I tell you something" I listen. Because he may not always want to tell me things.
And I don't always fix what he's telling me. Because it's not always something to be fixed. It's not always something he wants me to "do" anything about. He just wants to talk to me. To let me in.
I love getting to know him as he figures out who he is.
