Will the second paid expansion make the base game free-to-play?

At this point, if you are going to play Elite: Dangerous, then you are almost certainly going to pick up the Horizons expansion too. With the engineer upgrades locked behind the Horizons xpac, it makes it a no-brainer for anyone wanted to invest the time in building their perfect ship. Maybe not straight away, but as soon as you figure out you want to play the game for any length of time.

When the new xpac comes out I wouldn't be surprised if there are more features that feel as vital to the gameplay locked behind a second paywall and there will be many who see that as a necessary purchase too. That would mean that if you bought only the base game of Elite, you may feel you are buying only part of the essential product and not a complete game.

The possible benefit of going free-to-play for Elite would be hooking people in on a good premise for only the time-cost of the download and account creation, bringing more players to the galaxy fully able to engage with a large amount of the game, but also dangling a tempting lure for the purchase of the xpacs and of course the different ship kits and skins.

I did a search on the sub and couldn't see this question asked within the last year, so I hope it's not a tired old question at this point. What are other's pros and cons to this approach? When might be a good time to make this change?

First trip ever to colonia

Just decided to make my first trip to colonia.

Its gonna be a long one since I decided to make it in economy mode with 1kly jumps, scanning every unexplored system on the way. I assume that this trip will take a couple of weeks.

One question I got for you guys is. Will there be any dangers on the way? I'm traveling in an unarmed explorer.
