Volodymyr Zelenskyy's five-year term as Ukraine's president formally ended on May 20. An election would normally have been held in late March, but the parliament postponed the vote as the country is still at war and under martial law. But a major question remains for Ukrainians: who might succeed Zelenskyy once he leaves office?

In early 2024, few politicians and commentators openly pondered who could, or should, follow Zelenskyy. At the end of February, when Zelenskyy looked back on the past two years of fighting with Russia, the president dismissed any talk questioning his legitimacy as a "hostile narrative."

Speaking with journalists, Zelenskyy said neither the country's allies nor anyone in Ukraine were asking such questions. He said any such speculation was "part of the Russian Federation's program."

Ukrainian legal experts consulted by DW said they expected Zelenskyy would remain in power until a new president is elected. "The Ukrainian constitution states this clearly," said Andriy Mahera, of the Center of Policy and Legal Reform in Kyiv. "The president does not automatically lose his powers five years after inauguration. These powers are only removed when the newly elected president takes office, i.e., after elections."

NK deployed 250 ballistic missile launchers to its southern border

Weapons describing as a 'powerful treasured sword' to defend its sovereignty, state media said Monday. The olive green mobile launchers were displayed during a special 'transferring' ceremony in the capital Pyongyang on Sunday, the official Korean Central News Agency reported. The missile launchers were an 'up-to-date tactical attack weapon' said Kim in a speech. It was the first time North Korea had publicised the scale of an arms transfer to its border units, Han Kwon-hee of the Korea Association of Defence Industry Studies said. Each launcher was designed to hold four missiles, said, adding that Pyongyang's supply of arms to Moscow might have 'interfered with the North's capacity to actually produce 1,000 missiles'.

Judge in Manhattan rejected arguments by Epstein's ex-personal lawyer Darren Indyke & ex-accountant Richard Kahn that victims cannot pursue a class action because many agreed not to sue after settling claims against Epstein's estate.

Judge Subramanian said another plaintiff, Jane Doe 3, may pursue some claims, and file a motion for class certification "at the right time and with the right record."

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin is ordering all votes for the 2024 presidential election to be cast by paper ballot.

Youngkin issued Executive Order 35 on Wednesday, which codifies election security
protocols established under his governance for all future elections.
"The Virginia model for Election Security works. This isn't a Democrat or Republican issue, it's an American and Virginian issue," Youngkin said in an announcement.
