Context :
. Feb 20-21, 2024 : the British High Court examines the possible extradition of Julian Assange to the United States, where he has been indicted by the American government.

The case :
. involves a wide variety of classified documents leaked by Chelsea Manning (government employee) to WikiLeaks (see « Collateral Murder » released in 2010). Manning was caught and prosecuted (sentenced to 35 years in military prison and did 7). See the documentary « XY Chelsea » (2019)
. Julian Assange is a journalist. He did not break the law.
. Newspapers publish classified material and hardly anybody goes to jail.

Notes :
. Governments of every type sometimes hide their actions or policies from public view, which makes almost impossible for the public to evaluate and criticize their behavior.
. But there is a rich tradition where insiders leak information to journalists. One of the most famous case is « The Pentagon Papers » (about U.S. Decision-Making in Vietnam) published by the New York Times in 1971. Daniel Ellsberg didn’t go to jail, despite being the leaker (all charges against Ellsberg were dismissed in May 1973). Nobody at the New York Times went to jail, because journalists don’t go to jail for publishing classified information in the United States.

Julian Assange :
. He is NOT the equivalent of Ellsberg, because he was NOT the insider who leaked the information.
. Chelsea Manning was the insider.
. Assange was the « equivalent of the New York Times », and thus he should not be extradited to be put on trial in the U.S.

. Government leaders do not like leaks, unless they do the leaking !
. Thus, they are inclined to punish those who do leak.
. It is not acceptable for Governments to go after journalists.
. Freedom of the press is essential for monitoring Governments and holding them accountable when they pursue misguided policies.

2 very important points :
. Nobody was hurt because of the documents Assange published. Nobody’s life was put in danger.
. Assange has already paid a huge price for his actions (7 years confined and almost 5 years in high security prison).
. If he was extradited and trialed in the U.S., he could face 175 years in jail. A cruel and unusual punishment.

About John Mearsheimer :
. He is an American political scientist and international relations scholar. he teaches at the University of Chicago since 1982. In 2019, he said his preferred candidate in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary was Bernie Sanders.
He was also one of the most outspoken opponents of the 2003 Iraq War before it happened.

The letter from the 28 states assumes that the government is subordinate to the people, the government must defend the nation, and an armed population aids the government in defending the nation against all enemies.
