NOTE ON THE EXTRACTION OF CHINOIDE, AND ON THE MEDICAL USE OF QUININE SULFATE MOTHER WATERS

It is known that Mr. Sertuerner has recently made experiments tending to demonstrate the presence of a new alkali in the mother waters of quinine sulfate, and that he has named it chinoidine. Mr. Ravizza, chemist and pharmacist of Milan, has just simplified the method of extraction of this new product. Here is his procedure : he took four pounds of quinine sulfate mother waters which had been treated several times to remove all that they could still contain of quinine sulfate and cinchonine. These waters had a yellowish color, a slight viscosity and a rather unpleasant smell. After having removed from them, by various known methods, all that they contained of the indicated alkalis, a solution of chloride of soda was added to them little by little, and as the mixing took place, the liquid was covered with a layer of viscous fatty matter which was removed with difficulty with a thin card. When ten ounces of the chloride of soda solution had been added in this way, the waters became colorless, and let the new alkali (Chinoid) precipitate in the state of sulfate, combined with a little chloride of soda, from which it was then easy to separate. The four pounds of mother liquor gave in this way five large quantities of chinoid sulfate. This salt, when applied to the tongue, produces a sharper tingling than quinine sulfate, and is more soluble than the latter.
Mr. Sertuerner had thought that the residue of the mother waters of quinine sulfate could have harmful properties because of the coloring matter it contains. Far from it, it has a very great effectiveness as febrifuge. An experience of more than four years puts this truth beyond doubt. Dr. Casati and several other practitioners constantly use this extract with success, which is prepared by reducing the mother liquor (MAIN liquor??) by evaporation to the consistency of an extract. Twenty-four grains of this extract in twelve pills is commonly enough to make febrile attacks disappear. The frequency of intermittent fevers in Italy has given the opportunity to verify already a great number of times the effectiveness of its price. One hundred pounds of quinquina, says Mr. Ravizza, yields thirty-four ounces of quinine sulfate, plus ten ounces of extract from the mother liquor, and if twenty-four grains are sufficient for the cure, ten ounces of extract can be used to treat two hundred and forty patients. This method must therefore also be preferred to chinoid sulphate, whatever the method of extraction used to remove it from the motherwaters, since the extract contains this alkali in its entirety, and its properties are equally energetic.
