China's coal power on the rise again in 2026, reversing first-in-a-decade decline
- Coal-fired power generation seen rising by 1.5-2% this year
- Power sector coal consumption forecast to increase 3%
- El Nino to boost air conditioning, potentially cut hydropower
- China's power demand to grow by 5% again this year
China's coal-fired power generation is set to rebound this year from its first fall in a decade, analysts said, due to the impact of El Nino and the Iran war and as renewable sources of energy have failed to keep pace with demand.
The world's biggest power consumer increased its usage of thermal power by 3.4% year-on-year in the first five months of the year to 2.53 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh), statistics bureau data showed last week. Thermal power is mostly from coal with a small amount from gas.

Qatar LNG Disruption Raises Winter Gas Risks — and Gives Coal a Near-Term Tailwind
The global gas market remains under pressure even after the apparent easing of U.S.-Iran tensions. Oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have started to recover, but LNG shipments from Qatar remain heavily disrupted after renewed Iranian attacks on vessels. That matters because Qatar is one of the world’s largest LNG exporters and accounted for roughly one-fifth of global LNG supply before the conflict.

Geo Energy Commences Share Buyback Program, Underscoring Confidence in its Strong Business Fundamentals and Long-Term Prospects
- The share buyback marks the start of a series of share buybacks that the Group intends to undertake in the near future.
- The share buyback reflects the undervalued nature of our current share price particularly given that the Group is on the cusp of commencing operations at the Group’s transformational asset, PT Marga Bara Jaya (“MBJ”) Integrated Infrastructure. The Group had previously signed a term sheet and continues to be in discussions with Resource Invest AG to finalise a substantial investment in MBJ at a valuation of US$1.5 billion.
- Coal prices remain bullish, with Coal prices forecasted to become stronger with prices between US$65 – US$70 per tonne, with long-term increased demand already being seen in China, India, and Japan.

SAC Capital - Sanli Environmental Limited (SANLI SP, S$0.163, TP:S$0.182, BUY)
Sanli Environmental Limited reported mixed financial results for FY2026. The Group’s FY26 revenue declined by 11.4% YoY to S$139.6 million due to extended project timelines and resulting delays in revenue recognition. The Group’s overall gross margin increased 18.7% to 11.1% in FY26 from FY25 mainly due to improved margins from its Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) segment. As a result, the Group’s net profit increased 31.3% to S$2.25 million in FY26. The Group announced a proposed final dividend of 0.189 Singapore cents per share, constituting approximately 30% of net profit attributable to owners of the Company in FY2026.
The Group’s order book stood at S$741.8 million as of 31 March 2026 a compared to S$228.6 million at the end of FY25, providing significantly stronger revenue visibility for FY27 and FY28. The Group was awarded with multiple contract wins in FY2026, accumulating approximately S$590 million of new EPC contracts. The S$590 million includes a maiden LTA project with a contract value of S$281 million, and a new project by PUB with a contract value of S$205.0 million, demonstrating PUB’s continued trust in Sanli Environmental Ltd. Most recently, the Group was awarded new contracts across private and public sectors worth circa S$14.0 million, announced on 15 April 2026. The robust project pipeline reflects the Group’s strong foothold in the industry and provides an encouraging outlook for the next financial year.
Continued delays in revenue recognition. The Group’s FY26 revenue of S$139.6 million came in below our expected forecast of S$170.5 million, primarily due to delays in revenue recognition. Despite the elevated orderbook, we have conservatively revised our FY27 revenue forecast up 11.4% to S$225.8 million from our previous published number. Our FY27 and FY28 forecasts have taken into consideration 1-year delays on the Group’s short-term projects, as Sanli looks to clear its backlog of current projects and break ground for its new projects. Due to extended project execution timelines and associated delay-related costs, we lowered our expected gross margin for FY27 to 11.0% from 12.5%. Therefore, we adjust our FY27 net profit forecast down by 35.4% to S$5.3 million. Looking ahead, we expect project execution and delivery to improve in FY28 as new projects gain momentum. Accordingly, we forecast a modest recovery in gross margin to 11.5% in FY28.
Dividends for FY2026 amounted to 0.189 Singapore cents per share, constituting 29.9% dividend payout ratio. This is consistent with the dividend payout of FY24 and FY25, with dividend payout ratios of 30.0% and 29.8% respectively. Following this, we forecast a dividend yield of 2.2% for FY2027.
Risks Rising cost pressures increasing the prices of raw materials, freight rates and labor costs pose challenges, potentially eroding Sanli Environmental Limited’s gross margins.
Investment Recommendation To account for project delays, we have revised down our FY27 net profit forecast by 35.4% to S$5.3 million. With the substantial pipeline of EPC projects over the next few years, we expect the Group to regain its footing in producing timely project execution and delivery. Sanli is currently trading at a one-year forward P/E of 10.3x. Using the Catalist board valuation as a reference, the median P/E of the Catalist board is 12.0. We maintain our BUY call with a revised price target of S¢18.2, a 20.2% reduction from our previous price target. This represents a 11.6% upside from current levels.
