*Soyinka Lempaa declares more war with Tsc*

He writes....

Teachers Service Commissions is run by interesting persons ...They want to employ teachers on contracts and underpay them. A secondary teacher to earn Kshs 15 000/ & a primary teacher to earn Kshs 10,000.

We are going to fight this in court ..Yes!. The National Gender and Equality Commission and salaries commission will have to be joined in this ....

The Salaries and Remuneration Act says that people should be given equal pay for work of equal value. A graduate teacher earning Kshs 15000 is a mockery of and transgression of the constitution and the law.

A member of Parliament earns Kshs 851 000 and when you divide this by 15000 one MPs salary can employ 57 teachers! This is a joke and going by the current inflation and economic status, a commission that is supposed to protect people's rights is actually oppressing them

As this is happening National Gender and *Equality Commission* that only fights for the rights of elite women in urban centers is loudly silent as they earn hundreds of thousand in salaries .

We must, like advised by Wangari Maathai be like the humming bird and try to make *small contribution towards achieving social justice* and equality and equity. We must remind Constitutional commission that they must do their work ...

The problem however, the commissions have been captured by political failures like Florence Kajuju and Priscilla Nyokabi who have gone there as obscurantists and enemies of the people..

We shall fight TSC and any other constitutional commission that fetters its mandate or discretion. *Start trembling Teachers Service Commission* as for every illegal move you make shall be countered by robust defense of the constitution....

Mr Lempaa just won another case ordering TSC to remove age limit in teacher recruitment.

*THIS INTERNSHIP THING IS LIKE THE RUSSIAN ROULETTE*

Good evening my fellow interns. As at now a good number of us have secured their jobs. Kuddos! Hongera!.

Those who are attending the interviews tomorrow may your star guide you well.

Our friends who will not be lucky, God's timing is perfect.

Members since the intern thing came, we have been drawn to some hullabaloo on whether the interns will be confirmed or not. Ehehehe.. Let me state the following :

1. There is a lot that is prophesising that all the interns will be confirmed unconditionally upon completion of their terms. We all hope for this and we should also remember that this can only be true if tsc will not carry out its normal recruitment.
2. We have the second group who are saying that tsc will advertise mass recruitment next year and all the interns are free to apply and will be taken. I will sadly say that is very wrong. Any recruitment any month next year *will not* be taken by any intern. Ensure you read my accompanying photo to this write up and read the shaded part (in green)

3. The this group maintains that mass recruitment might be there next near and those who fail to taks up the interns will get a chance here.
4. The last group ( I belong) holds that after the end of internship some lucky lot wil be confirmed, but all.

*Conclusion*
1. This internship is like the famous Russian roulette, no one knows what it has in store.
2. Tsc in the advert, says that the commission will be carrying out internship program on annual basis. This simply means war. You either go for internship this time, or you wait this next year December.
ABOUT 700 KCSE exam markers at Machakos High ordered to leave after 2-day protests over poor working conditions: Kuppet Sec-Gen Akelo Misori.
During Kepsha's 15th annual conference in Mombasa County on Thursday, secondary school principals noted that watchmen employed by school boards of management earn an average of Sh15,000 a month.
While noting that statutory deductions lower the pay further, Knut and Kuppet asked the TSC to exclude the 10,300 interns from the delocalisation programme so that they work within their home counties.
The officials asked the TSC to set aside enough money for employment of teachers to bridge the shortage of 100,000 teachers in public schools.

Teachers with university degrees, whom the TSC has employed as interns, are earning less than some non-teaching staff at the schools where they serve, union officials have said and called for higher pay.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) and Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (Kessha) say the trainee teachers are demoralised so the contract terms should be reviewed.

The Teachers Service Commission pays interns posted to secondary school Sh15,000, which decreases to about Sh10,000 after statutory deductions.

They pay Sh1,200 for a mandatory personal accident cover while Sh3,000 is sent to the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb), Sh800 to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), Sh600 to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) deducts Sh 600 and Sh1,741 as Pay As You Earn (Paye).

Those posted to primary schools earn an average of Sh10,000, which decreases to about Sh6,000, after a PAYE of Sh1,116 and contributions to the NHIF and NSSF.

During Kepsha's 15th annual conference in Mombasa County on Thursday, secondary school principals noted that watchmen employed by school boards of management earn an average of Sh15,000 a month.

WARNING

As such, Knut and Kuppet want the TSC to exclude the 10,300 interns from the delocalisation programme so that they work within their home counties.

Mr Malel Langat, Knut's Bomet Secretary, his Sotik counterpart Mathias Langat and their Kuppet colleagues Paul Kimetto (Bomet) and Zablon Awange (Kisumu) warned of a negative impact on the quality of education across the country.

“Sadly, the interns have been engaged on contracts for one year yet there is no provision or guarantee for them to be employed on permanent and pensionable terms after the expiry of the contracts,” they said in Sotik on Thursday.

Mr Malel said, “President Uhuru Kenyatta needs to personally take charge of this matter and avert a crisis, that is slowly snowballing into a disaster in the education sector, that would be very costly for the country to correct in the future."

He added, “Much as we support the government’s efforts to create employment, the education sector is not a place for trial and error. All the trained teachers should be employed on permanent and pensionable terms."

SHORTAGE

The officials asked the TSC to set aside enough money for employment of teachers to bridge the shortage of 100,000 teachers in public schools, instead of taking a piecemeal approach in replacing those who left the service due to natural attrition.

Mr Awange said, “When the TSC advertises vacant positions at an average of 5,000 teachers to be employed on a yearly basis, what the country is not being told is that the shortages in schools continue to widen with increased intake."

Mr Kimetto stated, “When you pay teachers an average of 8,000 a month, you [are giving them the] minimum wage for a house-help, which is an abuse [considering] the donkey hours they gave studying for years and the cost of their education.”

Mr Langat said, “Besides the deductions, the interns have to pay rent, cater for their own transport, food, clothing and other incidentals, and provide for their families."

A principal who did not want to be named said the interns were demoralised.

"It is affecting service delivery. Some of them cannot make ends mee
t and are from far-flung counties. Watchmen in our institutions earn better than they do."

'NO SENSE'

In a separate statement, Kuppet's national vice chairman Julius Korir and Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui, the union’s assistant national treasurer, said it was not economical to post the trainee teacher to far-off counties.

“When you hire teachers as interns, with a paltry gross salary of Sh 15,000, then post them outside their regions, they will not be motivated to work hard as the money cannot sustain them," Mr Tonui said, adding the low pay renders the engagement unworthy as it does not make economic sense.

Mr Sammy Chelanga, Kuppet's secretary in charge of tertiary institutions, and Narok branch secretary Charles Ngeno regretted the requirement for the personal accident cover and the interns "do not have money in the first place".

Mr Chelanga said the quality of education in public schools was highly compromised by the shortage of teachers hence the need for a serious solution by the government.

“Partial employment of teachers, especially to replace those who leave service due to natural attrition, is not a solution to the shortage problem, coupled with the fact that there has been sharp rise in the number of schools and learners across the country."

SURVEY

A survey the TSC conducted in 2018 found a shortage of 10,000 teachers, a major challenge as the government seeks to achieve 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary school, and then to colleges.

*_@SOSSION'S LATEST SCARECROWS_*

*_After trying all kinds of arsenal to fight the teacher's employer, the knut despot Wilson has resulted to using the little known political rejects like one Joshua Kuttuny. This is after desperately trying to woo the likes of Kaluma and politically immature Kilonzo into his wars failed terribly, after the young politicians were stripped naked by the teachers real generals on the ground. The fact remains,Sossion is on his own struggling to remain relevant in the teachers circles. He has closed Knut offices and moved them to his parliamentary cubicle.Teachers requiring knut services are requested by a notice pinned at knut mfangano headquaters to either seek the services at the his Parliament buildings office or at Sossion's Bomet farm office where the knut Chairman and treasurer are currently operating from.To Kuttuny and cahoots,it is your time to eat.Sossion has amassed alot of wealth from teachers unions both locally and internationally, eat, eat, eat and invite other broke legistrators to join the eating spree.Infact Wilson was recently overheard boasting that he can buy the who is who in Kenya especially the broke and those struggling to remain relevant in political arena to come to his rescue. We are yet to see and count you.Truth be told, walimu walimkataa Sossion not only locally but also overseas long time ago.TSC that he is trying to fight is unshakable, its not going anywhere anytime soon and its leadership has no time for his endless tribal war cries.Meanwhile,to Joshua Kutuny, go mend your ways with your constituents who rejected you before poking your nose into a field you know nothing about.Utaumia bure..._*

*BREAKING* : WHAT THE WISEMEN SAY !!!Whoever said utavuna ulichokipanda was right!! Sossion rose to the top seat in Knut after shortchanging the intelligent wise fighter and fatherly hero Mudzo Nzili ! Iam sure Mudzo wept painfully and bitterly and eventually out of NO choice, he decided to let go !!! This was NOT fair to Mudzo or teachers but he did so out of maturity !! Sossion has gone ahead to clear all the leaders that he feel they have a voice and good support from teachers ! One of them is Patrick Karinga Munuhe !!! To add salt to the injury, ,he has cleared a whole community from Knut steering !!!!! My question is ,is this an achievement to be proud of ? Next in his plan is Sircozy Matiang'i !!! And why is Sossion refusing to leave Knut ? The truth is one !! Sossion want Knut to die !! He want to ensure that Knut will NEVER EVER rise again to be led by anyone else if NOT him !! After accomplishing that mission,he will leave happily !!!!! Iam told that Sossion cannot get a single vote from his backyard Bomet ! No one would support him in anything due to his bad relationship with people there ! According to reliable sources, they say he has NOT assisted his people like everyone would have expected ! He spends ALL his resources and time fighting TSC ! The Wise old men in Bomet have also been heard saying that According to kalenjin culture, there are some clans which has got some bad omen. Whenever they lead any party or union, it failed or fall down. This clan is called *kibomuek clan*. Their totem is an *Antelope*
It happens that sossion belong to that clan. He can't win in any battle. They are good planners but bad leaders with bad omen.More information loading....... !!!!

*A TEACHER HAS DIED AT LENANA BOYS WHILE MARKING BIOLOGY PAPER ONE*

Examiners marking Biology paper one at LENANA high say the female teacher collapsed and died while marking past this weekend.

KNEC is silent and is yet to release details of the teacher.

Female teachers take the biggest risk, when going for marking. Sanitation is bad. Provisions for women monthly hormonal changes are not catered for at boys schools like LENANA. We are calling on female teacher's leaders across Kenya to speak out on the same.

Note. The conditions in all marking centers are inhuman, pathetic and deadly. KNUT wrote a letter to KNEC demanding that teachers welfare in marking centers be improved. They also demanded proper compensation and recreation of examiners. Unions have highlighted these sufferings for long. We must highlight these terrible conditions and demand changes.

*CONCLUSION*
Teaching is quickly being turned into a form of slavery. Only our solidarity as teachers can save us from this inhumane acts.

*KUPPET AND KNEC TO MEET ON TUESDAY OVER THE EXAM MARKING CRISIS*

_KCSE markers’ strike sheds light on low pay_

nation.co.keDec 8, 2019 6:34 AM
KCSE

Protests by teachers marking this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations have exposed the poor working conditions they endure in order to deliver on their contracts.

_The tough conditions range from poor pay, accommodation and food, long working hours and round-the-clock monitoring by detectives drawn from various security agencies._

POOR CONDITIONS

The examiners are also banned from using mobile phones in the marking halls and can only access them late in the night or at dawn. These working conditions have led experienced examiners to shun the exercise.

*_Unlike in the past when the examiners used to mark the examinations over at least one month, the time has been reduced to between 16 and 18 days over the past four years in an attempt to curb cheating._*

“We are determined to conclude marking of the examinations on time so that we can release the results before Christmas,” said Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha during the ceremony concluding the KCSE examinations at Kenya High School.

Examiners in the 20 marking centres have been complaining over poor working conditions but it is the two-day protest by markers based at Machakos Girls High School that brought the poor conditions to light. The examiners cited harassment and intimidation by the centre manager while demanding an increase in the amount paid for marking the Business Studies paper from Sh46 to Sh68.

BEAT DEADLINE

After drawn-out negotiations with the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec), the amount was raised to Sh52 per script. According to Knec, Sh52 is paid per script for Christian religious Education (CRE), same as History while a Chemistry script fetches Sh46. English and Kiswahili scripts fetch an examiner Sh60.

Depending on an individual examiner’s speed, one can mark between 1,000 and 1,500 scripts during the entire exercise.

“When you arrive at an examination centre, you are given a roll of tissue paper, a blanket and a pair of sheets. The accommodation is in the dormitories used by students,” explained an examiner who sought anonymity for fear of victimisation by Knec.

The examiners are required to wake up as early as 5am and retire to bed at 11pm, with a one-hour lunch break. They are also required to work during public holidays to ensure they beat the Knec deadline of completing the exercise within 18 days.

LITTLE PAY

_“Guys are overworking in order to take home something good and this may compromise the quality of the results,” said another examiner._

On Thursday and Friday, marking of the Physics practicals was stopped at Upper Hill Secondary School marking centre as teachers demanded better pay. The go-slow forced Knec to hold a series of crisis meetings to calm the situation. Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima said the teachers were being subjected to long hours of marking and receiving very little pay. He added that teachers in most of the marking centres were on a go-slow because of poor pay and threats from their seniors and the examination council.

“Teachers have not marked the exam on Thursday and Friday, and as a union we want Knec to improve their pay,” he said.

*_The teachers were being paid Sh46 like their Business Studies counterparts._*

SACRIFICING

“We have already talked with teachers. We are addressing their issues to ensure that marking goes on successfully and credible results will be released,” Knec acting chief executive officer Mercy Karogo said after the go-slow went public.

During the ceremony to release this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) chief executive Nancy Macharia acknowledged that teachers involved in the administration of the examinations were sacrificing a lot.

She said during the examination, thousands of teachers were engaged as centre managers, supervisors, invigil
ators and examiners.

_“These assignments required of them to rise up as early as 5am daily. As a matter of fact, we wouldn’t be here were it not for the teachers’ work. The TSC, therefore, wishes to celebrate these teachers for their sacrifice,” said Ms Macharia._

CONVEYOR BELT

A total of 26,597 teachers are involved in marking the KCSE examinations. In the exercise, seven examiners and a team leader form a pool. For every 10 scripts they mark, the team leader goes through two, picked randomly, to check if they have been marked well. The margin of error allowed is plus or minus two, anything outside of this and the examiner is forced to remark the script.

Team leaders work under assistant examiners who also go through the answer sheets. Scripts with errors are put together and a council member checks the corrections before marks are recorded. Prof Magoha is on record stating that Knec is employing a “conveyor-belt system” to ensure that no single examiner marks an entire script by themselves. It means one examiner marks, say two questions, and passes the script to the next examiner.

*_Kuppet and Knec are planning a crisis meeting on Tuesday to address the teachers’ grievances. Kuppet has also asked Prof Magoha to intervene._
