Performance Gap in Ethiopian Exit-Exam Results

The Ethiopian Ministry of Education disclosed that out of the exceeding 150,000 university students who undertook their exit exam, the first of its kind, a mere 40.65% met the requirements to succeed. Consequently, only 61,054 candidates will assuredly obtain their bachelor’s degrees within the academic year 2022/23.

In public universities, Out of the 77,981 students who sat for the exam in 2015, 48,632 students or 62.37 percent passed the exam.

In private institutions, only 12,422 students or 17.2 percent of the 72,203 students who sat for the exam scored 50 and above.

The performance gap between private and public universities necessitates action from both sides.

- Private universities and colleges should prioritize improving their educational standards to bridge the gap.

- Students studying in private institutions must strive to obtain a valuable education that can compete with the quality offered in public universities.
