This was the first time a specific sum was designated for the revival, promotion, and encouragement of literature, learning, and science among the native people of India. The Charter Act of 1813 also established the foundation for modern Indian education and allowed Christian missionaries to establish schools in India.
Key Provisions and Significance
Financial Grant for Education:
The Act mandated that the East India Company spend one lakh rupees annually on the education of Indians.
Promotion of Literature and Science:
The funds were to be used for the revival and promotion of Indian literature and the study of sciences.
Western Education:
This act laid the foundation for the spread of Western education and culture in India, with English eventually becoming the medium of instruction.
Missionary Activities:
The Act granted permission to Christian missionaries to come to India and establish modern English schools for the Indian population.
Abolition of Trade Monopoly:
The Charter Act of 1813 also abolished the East India Company's trade monopoly with India in most commodities, though they retained the monopoly for tea and Chinese trade.
