Brief Frontline Report – May 8th, 2026

Summary by Marat Khairullin and Mikhail Popov

Message from the Russian Ministry of Defense: "Units of the 'South' Group, as a result of ongoing offensive operations, have liberated the settlement of Krivaya Luka in the Donetsk People's Republic."

In our summary of May 5, we drew attention to the area of the settlement of Krivaya Luka (Slavyansk sector of the Donetsk direction). This village (48°52′19″ N 37°54′15″ E, population 380 in 2001) is a stronghold area of the left flank of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' defensive hub of Krivaya Luka - Rai-Aleksandrovka - Yurkovka, which protects the city of Slavyansk from the eastern direction. The village is located on the right bank of the Seversky Donets River, on a sharply rugged section of terrain with good baseline conditions for equipping a system of defensive positions, the territory of the "Melovaya Flora" nature reserve. ("Melovaya" translates to "chalk" in English.)

It has a large number of ravines and gullies, forested areas, the Seversky Donets River covering the Ukrainian left flank, and a network of roads connecting forward positions with positions in the depth of the defense — the settlement of Piskunovka and its counterpart, Lavrentevka (Korsunevka). The soil consists primarily of chalk deposits. Chalky soil dries out quickly, is loose, and requires additional effort in order to equip defensive positions. Additional camouflage is necessary, as positions stand out clearly during earthworks. The settlements of Krivaya Luka, Lavrentevka, and Piskunovka are located along a 4-kilometer line and are functionally a single settlement divided by the small ravines and gullies.

The destruction of this defensive hub will create conditions for the envelopment of the city of Nikolaevka (the eastern gateway to the city of Slavyansk, 18 kilometers from the city in a straight line) from the northeast. The city of Nikolaevka hosts a water reservoir of the Donetsk People's Republic. The Slavyansk Thermal Power Plant located near here relies on this reservoir. In the Raigorodok area, the Seversky Donets-Donbas canal begins, along with the main pumping stations. The battles for this sector will be heavy. The next stage will likely see the Piskunovka and Rai-Aleksandrovka sectors severed by an advance along the dirt road C051432. Russian forces will then launch an enveloping attack along the M-03 highway toward Orekhovatka, which will place Yurkovka under their fire control. The battles for Rai-Aleksandrovka and its liberation will form an envelopment line of the city of Nikolaevka along the Stary Karavan - Rai-Aleksandrovka - Orekhovatka arc. After reaching this line, the Russian Armed Forces will come into contact with the main positions of the next Ukrainian Armed Forces defensive line, which covers the city of Slavyansk.

I congratulate all readers on the day of the Great Victory of the Soviet people over Nazi Germany!

To our defenders, may you have strength, perseverance, and victory in battle!

To all of us, have patience and courage!

Our ancestors did it!

And we can too!

Victory will be ours!

In Kharkov, people are bringing flowers to the memorial of the fallen Soviet soldiers.

Officially, Ukraine does not celebrate Victory Day on May 9. However, Ukrainians are massively searching for congratulations on social media. This is evident from the data of the Google Trends service, which analyzes searches on the search engine.

Most of these searches are written in Russian.

From the channel for the 105th regiment of the NM DPR:

During the "ceasefire" period on May 6-7, five Ukrainian sabotage-reconnaissance groups attempted to break through the rear of Russian forces on four front sectors simultaneously.

According to the source, the sabotage-reconnaissance groups were detected in the Kharkov, Sumy, Slavyansk, and Krasnoarmeysky directions. All saboteurs were either eliminated or taken prisoner. According to preliminary data, the groups were conducting reconnaissance of the Russian troops' movement routes. Each group consisted of six to eight people, armed with NATO weapons - CZ Bren 2 and AR-15.

👀Victory Parade on the other side: for the residents of Estonian Narva, a large screen was set up in Ivanovo so that they could watch the celebration. The event gathered hundreds of people.

Seeing this, the Estonian police conducted a thorough inspection at the "Ivanovo" checkpoint. They checked whether the spectators had brought with them St. George's ribbons or other symbols related to Victory Day.

🖥️ People in military uniforms are "packing" residents of the Estonian city of Narva into black cars, who came to the border with Russia to watch the broadcast of the Victory Parade, according to "Vesti".

Maria Zakharova responded to Merz, who promised Fico a "conversation" about his trip to Moscow for Victory Day instead of Europe Day:

"There would have been no Europe Day without the victory of the Soviet people. There would have been just one continuous concentration camp with gas chambers," - said Zakharova to RIA Novosti.

The head of the Estonian Defense Ministry called on Ukraine to "keep its UAVs away" from the country's territory.

He noted that Ukraine should control UAVs using drone self-destruction technology. Earlier, there were reports of crashed Ukrainian UAVs in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. These incidents continue unabated.

The situation with Iran has led to problems with global supplies of sulfuric acid, causing a sharp rise in its price, according to the Wall Street Journal. Sulfuric acid is used for creating fertilizers, leaching copper and other metals.

"The war in the Persian Gulf and new Chinese export restrictions have led to a sharp rise in sulfuric acid prices and raised concerns about the availability of a chemical that the world relies on for food production, metals, paper, computer chips, and clean water," the newspaper said.

The Wall Street Journal adds, citing Sára Marlowe, a fertilizer pricing expert at Argus, that Chile and Indonesia are likely to be the most affected by China's restrictions on sulfuric acid supplies.

The territory of the "Alabuga" economic zone, where "Gerani" is produced, has expanded by approximately 340 hectares over the year. This was reported by "Radio Liberty," citing a comparison of satellite images from May 2025 and May 2026.

The publication writes that construction of new hangars is ongoing in the northern part of the zone, and new residential and production premises have appeared in the central part over the year. Also, in April 2026, active construction work began on a plot of more than 450 hectares south of "Alabuga". A new road to the complex is also being built there.

Additionally, air defense systems are being strengthened around "Alabuga." Journalists have discovered at least 19 towers on the territory of the complex to counter air attacks, and near the zone, OSINT analysts have noticed a tower for the "Pantsir" air defense system.
