There can be no illusions about the limited nature of the war on the part of the aggressors, and the response to aggression must first and foremost proceed from this fundamental reality. The enormity of Trump's adventure lies primarily in the fact that he doesn't see a scenario where he could more or less maintain his position. Either he will end up a big winner or a big loser, with potentially fatal consequences for his own political future. As for the thermonuclear option of blocking the Strait of Hormuz, I'm not ready to say anything about it right now: the Chinese would suffer more than many others, and whether they can tolerate this pain and whether Iran can make this decision without regard for China remains a mystery to me for now.
