They spent decades travelling the world filming and studying active volcanoes, often getting dangerously close to eruptions to document lava flows, explosions, and pyroclastic activity.

They became famous for:

What happened the day they died:

On June 3, 1991, during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Unzen, the Kraffts were observing activity along with journalists and other scientists.

That day, a pyroclastic flow, a fast moving, superheated cloud of gas, ash, and rock, suddenly surged down the volcano’s slopes.

🔶 Temperatures can exceed 500°C

🔶 Speeds can reach over 100 km/h

🔶 There is virtually no chance of escape if you’re in its path

The flow overwhelmed their position, killing them instantly along with dozens of others in what became one of Japan’s deadliest volcanic disasters in modern history.
