Saudi Arabia opposed the inclusion of Egypt in the new joint defense agreement between Mecca, Turkey, and Pakistan, despite Ankara's efforts to include Cairo, according to Saudi sources cited by Middle East Eye.

The agreement, signed in Mecca on August 7th, obligates the three countries to treat an armed attack on any one of them as an attack on all of them. Riyadh views Egypt, under President al-Sisi, as an unreliable partner, dependent on aid, with limited strategic value, and opposes its close ties with the United Arab Emirates.

🇫🇷 Israeli man Tomer Eyal, 32, and his partner Alan were attacked by a group of teenagers at Sherwood Parc, about 40 minutes north of Paris, according to mako.

The couple were holding hands when members of the group began shouting homophobic insults at them. Tomer said that shortly afterward, around eight teenagers surrounded them and began hitting them.

"Some of them had sticks," Tomer said, adding that one swung metal climbing equipment at them. "I remember looking at Alan and thinking: there's a chance life ends here."

The couple said they repeatedly called for security, but no one came for some time. Police eventually arrived, but none of the alleged attackers were arrested at the scene.

According to Tomer, a criminal lawyer who later contacted the local police station was told that no case had been opened following the incident and that homophobia was not among their top priorities because of more serious incidents in the area.

Tomer and Alan later went to the police station themselves and filed a formal complaint. According to Tomer, officers there were surprised that members of the group had not been arrested at the scene.

They are now waiting to learn what steps authorities will take next.

Since 1967, Israel has occupied the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. In 1980, Israel annexed East Jerusalem, followed by the annexation of the Golan Heights in 1981. In response, the United Nations Security Council (hereinafter: UNSC) declared that the annexations of East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights violate international law.

In July 2024, the International Court of Justice (hereinafter: ICJ) issued an advisory opinion to the United Nations General Assembly (hereinafter: UNGA) regarding Israel's actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. (…) In this opinion, the ICJ concluded that Israel's (continued) presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is unlawful and must be terminated as rapidly as possible. (…) For other states, this implies, among other things, that they must abstain from acts that recognize or entrench the unlawful situation in the territories occupied by Israel. This means, inter alia, that they must take steps to prevent trade or investment relations that contribute to maintaining the unlawful situation, according to the ICJ.

JERUSALEM / CAIRO — The Six-Day War of June 1967 was not a sudden explosion, but the inevitable detonation of a regional powder keg. Driven by escalating geopolitical rivalries, fierce border skirmishes, and existential brinkmanship, the conflict permanently reshaped the modern Middle East.

While Israel launched the opening salvo with a preemptive airstrike, the war was the culmination of years of friction between the Jewish state and its Arab neighbors—Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.

The Catalysts of Conflict
The Water War (1964–1965): Regional tensions peaked when Arab states attempted to divert the headwaters of the Jordan River. This move aimed to cripple Israel’s water supply. The provocation triggered severe border clashes and artillery duels.

The Tiran Straits Blockade: In May 1967, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser closed the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping. This cut off Israel’s vital access to the Red Sea. Jerusalem had previously warned that such a blockade would be considered a direct casus belli.
Mobilization and Rhetoric: Flushed with pan-Arab fervor, Egypt expelled UN peacekeeping forces (UNEF) from the Sinai Peninsula and deployed heavy armor to Israel’s doorstep. Mutual defense pacts between Arab nations signaled an imminent, multi-front offensive.

Guerrilla Warfare: From 1965 onward, Palestinian fedayeen groups—notably al-Fatah—staged cross-border raids from bases in Syria and Jordan. Israel countered with aggressive retaliatory strikes, further destabilizing the frontiers.

The Legacy of 1948 and 1956: The underlying triggers traced back to unresolved grievances from the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the 1956 Suez Crisis. Arab nations refused to recognize Israel's legitimacy, while Israel viewed its neighbors’ posture as an existential threat.

Facing what it perceived as an imminent invasion, Israel launched a devastating preemptive strike on June 5, 1967. By catching the Egyptian air force on the tarmac, Israel secured immediate air supremacy, effectively deciding the trajectory of the war in its opening hours.

In conclusion:
It is deeply concerning that the Dutch Government shows a profound disregard for history by maintaining its import ban on Israeli goods. Furthermore, it is highly regrettable that the Council of State has chosen to endorse this governmental trade restriction.

It appears that while taking punitive actions against Israel is permitted, defending its right to a just standing is not. This ban should be rescinded without delay.
